Bowen Yang<\/strong><\/a> is making it clear that he did not \u201cmock\u201d Chappell Roan<\/strong><\/a> during the Saturday Night Live<\/em><\/a> season 50 premiere \u2014 despite what some viewers think.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh geeez. \u2018Mocks\u2019???\u201d the comedian, 33, shared via his Instagram Story on Sunday, September 29, alongside a Variety<\/em> article recapping his performance<\/a>. \u201cIf my personal stance and the piece aren\u2019t absolutely clear in terms of supporting her then there it is I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yang, who spoke with Roan for an Interview Magazin<\/em>e profile last month<\/a>, continued: \u201cEverything she has ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever. Needing the hose rn.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Variety<\/em><\/a> article\u2019s headline read, \u201c\u2018SNL\u2019 Mocks Chappell Roan as Bowen Yang\u2019s Moo Deng Takes on Crazy Fans,\u201d and plenty of fans online had a similar interpretation of Yang\u2019s \u201cWeekend Update\u201d appearance. During the Saturday, September 28, premiere episode, Yang took the SNL<\/em> stage dressed as Moo Deng \u2014 a baby pygmy hippopotamus from a Thailand zoo that has gone viral on social media.<\/p>\n

Colin Jost<\/strong> introduced Yang as Moo Deng, noting that zoo lovers have been throwing things at the hippo to get her attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the past 10 weeks, I have been going nonstop. Running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water from a hose and the response has been overwhelming,\u201d Yang said, eliciting laughs from the crowd. \u201cBut it has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yang\u2019s Moo Deng said that his talent is \u201chaving a slippery body that bounces\u201d before naming other notable hippos, including \u201chungry, hungry\u201d and Jada Pinkett Smith<\/strong>\u2019s character from the 2005 animated film Madagascar<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut now, I\u2019m your favorite hippo\u2019s favorite hippo \u2014 and I\u2019m thirsty thirsty,\u201d Yang continued, dressed as the animal. \u201cTrust me, I would not be in this position without my fans \u2026 [and] my Moo Deng boo thangs. But the harassment has been intolerable. Oh, my God, they\u2019re throwing shellfish and bananas at me!\u201d<\/p>\n

Yang\u2019s comments were immediately compared to Roan, 26, who has referred to herself as \u201cyour favorite artists\u2019 favorite artist.\u201d In recent weeks, the \u201cGood Luck Babe\u201d singer has been vocal about enforcing boundaries as her fame continues to grow. (Last month, Roach said she was \u201cscared and tired\u201d of \u201cpredatory\u201d fans<\/a> trying to touch her in public.)<\/p>\n

Murphy, for his part, appeared as a cast member from 1980 to 1984. He went on to become a lucrative movie star, but tension between him and the show arose after [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jost, 42, was quick to acknowledge the comparisons between Moo Deng and Roan as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to say, Moo Deng, your life sounds a lot like Chappell Roan\u2019s lately,\u201d he said. \u201cDo you know Chappell Roan?\u201d<\/p>\n
