But it was <em>SNL<\/em>\u2019s decision to tap <strong>Bowen Yang<\/strong> as Trump\u2019s vice-presidential pick, J.D. Vance, that will likely drive their campaign crazy. Being played by a gay Asian who likely knows his way around an eyeliner should eat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/john-oliver-begs-republicans-to-stop-being-so-f-king-weird\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">those weirdos<\/a> up. And it nicely sets up a future cold open between Gaffigan\u2019s Dog Lover and Yang\u2019s Cat Hater post next week\u2019s VP debate.<\/p>\n<figure data-testid=\"IframeEmbed\" class=\"IframeEmbedWrapper-sc-dRedg hZcniq iframe-embed\">\n<div data-testid=\"IframeEmbedContainer\" class=\"IframeEmbedContainer-hptgUZ jiSsxp\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"IframeEmbedContent-cMdiev csnuAY IframeEmbedContent\" height=\"113\" width=\"200\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-presentation\" title=\"Embedded Frame\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/vfIbbP3vuwA\" allow=\"autoplay *; encrypted-media *; clipboard-write; autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Yang, the night\u2019s MVP alongside Rudolph, would play another baby hippo later in the evening. During Weekend Update, Yang stuffed himself into a shimmery rubber suit and flapped his little hooves to bemoan the travails of Moo Deng. Playing the most famous 10-week-old zoo animal in the world, Yang delivered a near verbatim version of <strong>Chappell Roan<\/strong>\u2019s monologue of depression and frustration. It was pointed without being nasty. My 16-year-old Chappell Roan fan and I rewound the scene of Yang\u2019s hippo demanding \u201cHose!\u201d and biting at the water spray more than a few times. Hang in there, young stars. You deserve better than whatever versions of shellfish and bananas are being slung at you in this wild moment of stratospheric attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">No matter who the host of the premiere was, she was bound to be overshadowed by the onslaught of the summer\u2019s insane headlines. And so it was with emcee <strong>Jean Smart<\/strong>, who cut an elegant and snappy figure throughout the episode if not a particularly memorable one. Her monologue began with a couple of <em>ba dum tss<\/em> a la her <em>Hacks<\/em> character, Deborah Vance\u2014jokes that are more stylish lines meant to be chortled over expensive martinis\u2014before switching quickly into a tenderly delivered rendition of Judy Garland\u2019s \u201cI Happen to Like New York.\u201d Speaking of tender: how could we not cheer at the sight of her <em>Hacks<\/em> co-star (and daughter of original <em>SNL<\/em> star <strong>Laraine Newman<\/strong>) <strong>Hannah Einbinder<\/strong> standing lovingly at her side as Smart introducer musical guest <strong>Jellyroll<\/strong>\u2019s first performance?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">No, this was a premiere that had to hit the most absurd and inescapable beats of the last couple of months: <strong>Sabrina Carpenter\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cEspresso,\u201d the Turkish shooter at the Olympics, the chimp from <em>Chimp Crazy<\/em>, the downfall of Diddy, the indictment of New York\u2019s <strong>Mayor Eric Adams<\/strong>, the disgrace of North Carolina\u2019s Lt. Governor <strong>Mark Robinson<\/strong>, <strong>Hoda Kotb<\/strong> stepping down from the <em>Today<\/em> show, Trump on Mars, <strong>Charli XCX<\/strong> as a cultural thought leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">For all its pinballing around recent events, <em>SNL<\/em> decided to end with a sketch of sudsy goodness. Smart played one of <em>the Real Housewives of Santa Fe<\/em> as the women took their feuding to the Rancho Mexicano cantina. They took turns swiping at the legitimacy of one another\u2019s egopreneurial endeavors. \u201cSo now Candles by Brie is not a business?!\u201d \u201cTell me how Hats by Yvonne is not a business?!\u201d \u201cSo now for-profit prisons are not a business?!\u201d It\u2019s good to laugh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/snl-maya-rudolph-kamala-harris-election-impressions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>James Austin Johnson returned as Donald Trump, predictably shouting about Haitians eating cats and dogs and forcing them to attend Diddy\u2019s freak-offs.
