The company is now saying that it will rely on a mix of hybrids and battery electric vehicles to reach its new goal of selling \u201c90 to 100 percent&#8230; electrified models\u201d by 2030. Carbon neutrality for the whole company, including its factory operations and supply chain, will be reached by 2040. Butani calls this \u201cadjusting our ambitions a bit.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The adjustment is the result of months of declining customer interest in EVs, leading to slower growth in sales than originally predicted. Just 22 percent of new-vehicle shoppers told JD Power this past month they were \u201cvery likely\u201d to consider an EV for their next new-vehicle purchase, a 4.2 percent drop from a year ago. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cWe want to go electric,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know that\u2019s the right thing to do, and we need collaboration in our industry and outside of our industry to make sure that that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Butani says efforts by governments to promote EVs have been insufficient. \u201cGovernments are taking back incentives,\u201d she said. \u201cInfrastructure isn\u2019t being rolled out fast enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">\u201cWe need collaboration in our industry and outside of our industry to make sure that that happens\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">While it\u2019s true that EV charging infrastructure improvements have been uneven, customers are reporting that it\u2019s getting better. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdpower.com\/business\/press-releases\/2024-us-electric-vehicle-experience-evx-public-charging-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Another JD Power survey<\/a> last month recorded a 10-point increase year over year in customer satisfaction with public DC fast charging stations. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And Butani\u2019s complaint about governments revoking incentives calls to mind the adjustments around eligibility for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/20\/23691597\/ev-tax-credit-eligible-vehicles-battery-irs-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the federal EV tax credit<\/a>. Volvo lost eligibility after the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, which mandated that electric vehicles and batteries be manufactured in the US in order to receive the credit. Since then, many manufacturers have said they would build EV battery factories in the US in order to qualify \u2014 but Volvo, which is owned by China\u2019s Geely, has not. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The company\u2019s Chinese ownership structure is also proving to be its own barrier. Volvo was planning on releasing its compact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/7\/23750921\/volvo-ex30-compact-suv-ev-price-specs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EX30 SUV<\/a> at the highly attractive starting price of $35,000 in the US this year. But the Biden administration threw a wrench in those plans when it announced its intention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/5\/10\/24153830\/biden-china-ev-tariff-quadruple-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quadrupling tariffs on Chinese-made EVs to 100 percent<\/a>. The EX30, which has been enormously popular in Europe, is built in China, with the initial slate of US-bound units expected to come from the Zhangjiakou factory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Now, Volvo is scrambling to shift production to Europe, meaning the EX30 likely won\u2019t make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/6\/26\/24186691\/volvo-officially-delays-the-ex30-in-the-us-until-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it to the US until late 2025<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The tariffs have been keeping Volvo \u201con its toes,\u201d Butani said, and serve as a stark reminder why it\u2019s important to cite production facilities close to where you are selling your vehicles. \u201cTariffs are tough, of course, and they do have an impact,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s another way of making it more challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Challenging, but not impossible. Volvo is still a leader in sustainability, Butani said. And the \u201cadjustment,\u201d as she calls it, will only result in a 5\u201310 percent change in emissions reductions. So, instead of 40 percent emissions reduction per car by 2025, it will be 30\u201335 percent reductions.
