Ryan Murphy<\/strong><\/a> is defending his new Netflix show, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story<\/i>, amid criticism from one of the brothers at the center of the infamous murder case.<\/span><\/p>\n

Erik Menendez<\/strong> slammed Monsters<\/i><\/span><\/a> in a statement a day after the show\u2019s September 19 release, expressing frustration with \u201cNetflix\u2019s dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Monday, September 23, Murphy issued a rebuttal in an interview with Entertainment Tonight<\/i><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s interesting that he\u2019s issued a statement without having seen the show,\u201d the writer-producer, 58, told the outlet, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s really, really hard \u2014\u00a0if it\u2019s your life \u2014\u00a0to see your life up on screen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNetflix\u2019s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Men\u00e9ndez Story worked hard to make sure the cast resembled their real-life counterparts. The 10-episode limited series, which will be released on September 19, follows Lyle and Erik Men\u00e9ndez, who were convicted for the 1989 murder of their parents. The siblings confessed to the crime and claimed they killed [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Murphy said that \u201cif you watch the show, I would say 60 to 65 percent\u201d of the scripted narrative centers \u201caround the abuse and what they claim happened to them. And we do it very carefully and we give them their day in court and they talk openly about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Monsters<\/i> has drawn controversy<\/span><\/a> for how it depicts Erik, 53, and his brother Lyle, 56, in recounting the events that led up to their murder trial. The siblings \u2014 portrayed by Cooper Koch<\/strong> and Nicholas Alexander Chavez<\/strong>, respectively \u2014 were convicted for killing their parents in 1989 and remain behind bars to this day. Murphy and his Monsters<\/i> cowriters present different perspectives on Erik and Lyle\u2019s motives, including their claims that they\u2019d acted in self-defense following years of alleged physical, emotional and sexual abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a \u2018Rashomon\u2019 kind of approach, where there were 4 people involved in that. Two of them are dead,\u201d Murphy told Entertainment Tonight<\/i>, noting, \u201cWhat about the parents? We had an obligation as storytellers to also try and put in their perspective based on our research, which we did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Murphy continued, \u201cIf you watch the show, what the show is doing is presenting the points of view and theories from so many people who were involved in the case.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about the show hinting at an incestuous relationship between the brothers<\/span><\/a>, he countered that \u201cDominick Dunne<\/strong> wrote several articles talking about that theory. We are presenting his point of view. \u2026 And we had an obligation to show all of that and we did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
