Maks Chmerkovskiy<\/strong><\/a> is not mincing words when it comes to his thoughts about convicted felon Anna Delvey<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s casting on Dancing With the Stars<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

While talking about casting the 13 celebrities on each season of DWTS<\/em> on the \u201cTMZ Podcast<\/a>\u201d on Monday, September 23, Chmerkovskiy, 44, broke down the types of contestants they look to fill specific archetypes, including beloved but older icons, retired athletes, young rising stars and more. However, when it came to discussing Delvey\u2019s controversial casting on the current season of the long-running show, the pro dancer didn\u2019t hold back his disapproval.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo those are the kind of qualities you put together. And then there\u2019s like, \u2018OK, so who\u2019s going to draw attention?\u2019 And now you\u2019re talking about someone like an Anna character, right?\u201d Chmerkovskiy began. \u201cSo my struggle here \u2026 I can see both sides. I can also be on the production side and I can be on the viewer side and understand it all. But if you want an ankle [bracelet] and sort of this, \u2018Damn, this is going to draw attention,\u2019 and the scandalousness of it all \u2013 I mean, there\u2019s so many other people you can choose from.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if he\u2019s a fan of Delvey, 33, Chmerkovskiy continued, \u201cAbsolutely not. It doesn\u2019t matter [who I would choose as a replacement]. To me, [Delvey\u2019s] job was a professional liar. You\u2019re gonna bring that person [on stage] and say, \u2018Here\u2019s a platform that a lot of people waited their entire actual career to be a part of,\u2019 to also get a moment of a personal story [where they] can say, \u2018This is who I actually am.\u2019 Will I believe anything this lady says? Absolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMirrorball champs or not,\u00a0Dancing With the Stars\u00a0has featured some impeccable professional dancers in the years since the ABC competition series premiered in 2005. Derek Hough, Cheryl Burke and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are among the talent who have lit up the ballroom. Some of the show\u2019s stars went on to achieve major success in their careers while [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Chmerkovskiy went on to critique Delvey\u2019s cha-cha dance \u2014 in which she sported a bedazzled ankle monitor<\/a> \u2014 sharing that he thought \u201cshe wasn\u2019t great\u201d and she was \u201cvery kind of standoffish in a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can blame the nerves and say, \u2018Hey, everybody\u2019s human and this person is not used to that stage.\u2019 Bulls\u2014,\u201d he said. \u201cHold on a second \u2014 didn\u2019t she con people into believing she was, like, fully fashion this and special like that? And that takes a lot of guts. It takes a lot of self-control to present yourself a certain way, even if you\u2019re so nervous. I don\u2019t buy this \u2018she was nervous\u2019 stuff. She\u2019s a sh\u2014y dancer, and [her] personality is not really going to help her in this competition.\u201d<\/p>\n

After he was asked how far Delvey would go in the competition alongside partner and newcomer Ezra Sosa<\/strong>, Chmerkovskiy replied, \u201cI don\u2019t care. She\u2019s not somebody I tune in to watch \u2026 I\u2019m not saying anything that no one else is saying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Delvey was arrested in 2017 and indicted on multiple counts of grand larceny and misdemeanor theft. She was released from prison on parole in 2021 and was put under house arrest one year later after being taken into custody for overstaying her visa. (A famous New York<\/em> magazine profile about her was adapted for Netflix\u2019s 2022 series Inventing Anna<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you are partnered with someone, like, with her story, you have no other option but to lean into it,\u201d Sosa, 23, explained during a recent interview<\/a> on the \u201cLightweights<\/a>\u201d podcast. \u201cLike, that\u2019s the only way you can really win people over is taking what she is and her story and just really going for it. Even though some people might not like it, no matter what, you\u2019re gonna be watching anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

After their debut performance during the season premiere earlier this month, Sosa and Delvey denied that they felt a palpable shift of energy<\/a> in the crowd as they performed.<\/p>\n
