It\u2019s turning the page on an era of dirty energy that the UK helped usher in globally and now has to leave behind to meet climate goals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The coal power plant was first commissioned in 1967, and received its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniper.energy\/united-kingdom\/news\/gb-railfreight-completes-historic-final-coal-delivery-and-names-a-locomotive-ratcliffe-power-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last coal delivery<\/a> in June. The 2,000 megawatt-capacity plant can produce enough electricity for some two million homes, according to the energy company Uniper that owns it. Over its decades in operation, it\u2019s generated enough energy to make more than 21 trillion cups of tea, or roughly 1 billion cups per day, Uniper says. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">Uniper announced plans to eventually produce hydrogen at the site instead of coal power<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Still, it\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c886qd2g80xo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly take two years<\/a> to decommission the plant after it shuts down, requiring 125 staff to stay on board until then. Uniper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniper.energy\/united-kingdom\/news\/uniper-plans-to-develop-large-scale-low-carbon-hydrogen-production-at-its-ratcliffe-power-station-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced plans<\/a> last year to eventually produce hydrogen at the site instead of coal power. Unlike fossil fuels, hydrogen fuel doesn\u2019t create planet heating carbon dioxide pollution when burned. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The caveat is that most hydrogen today is made through a process called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/hydrogen-fuel-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steam methane reforming<\/a>, which still leads to greenhouse gas emissions. A cleaner way to make hydrogen is through electrolysis, splitting water molecules using renewable energy. Uniper says it\u2019s interested in producing hydrogen through electrolysis at the former coal plant, reaching a capacity of 500 megawatts by the end of the decade. After redeveloping the site to produce low carbon energy, Uniper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniper.energy\/united-kingdom\/news\/green-light-given-for-redevelopment-of-unipers-ratcliffe-on-soar-power-station-site-in-nottinghamshire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says it could create up to 8,000 jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Coal still makes up more than a third of the world\u2019s electricity mix, generating <a href=\"https:\/\/ember-climate.org\/topics\/coal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more power and greenhouse gas emissions than any other fuel<\/a>. But coal-fired power generation has dropped dramatically in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/ember-climate.org\/insights\/research\/the-uks-journey-to-a-coal-power-phase-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since 2012<\/a>, falling from nearly 40 percent to just 1 percent of the UK\u2019s electricity mix by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-uk-electricity-from-fossil-fuels-drops-to-lowest-level-since-1957\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>. Greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector have fallen 74 percent over the same period of time as wind and solar replace coal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The UK passed a Climate Change Act in 2008 that <a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cdp-2023-0124\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set it on a path<\/a> to ditch coal on the way to reaching a target of net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
