Even though he\u2019s bowed out of<\/a> the 2024 race for the White House, the headlines about Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.<\/strong> keep coming. The latest scandal involving whale-beheading<\/a>, bear-dumping<\/a>, Trump-endorsing<\/a> RFK, Jr., is an allegedly inappropriate relationship with New York<\/em> magazine\u2019s Washington, D.C. correspondent Olivia Nuzzi, which<\/strong><\/a> has kept Kennedy in the news after the alleged sexual assailant<\/a> ended his presidential campaign (though he remains on some state ballots, including Wisconsin<\/a>‘s).<\/p>\n The new reports, which broke Thursday evening, are just the latest in shocking Kennedy-related headlines, along with his aggressive emu roommate<\/a>, Kennedy’s ongoing attacks<\/a> on life-saving vaccines, and the notorious brain worm<\/a>. After Vanity Fair<\/em> reported<\/a> that a former babysitter has accused Kennedy of sexually assaulting her, Kennedy responded<\/a>, \u201cI am not a church boy.\u201d<\/p>\n The reports regarding Nuzzi\u2014which Kennedy has neither confirmed nor denied\u2014come at a dangerous time for the mainstream media, the credibility of which has faced increasing attacks in recent years. It doesn\u2019t help that pop culture depictions of real journalists suggest that unprofessional relationships are stock in trade.<\/p>\n According to Status\u2019s Oliver Darcy<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> New York<\/em> magazine placed 31-year-old political reporter Nuzzi, 31, on leave after she \u201callegedly engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a reporting subject.\u201d Though neither New York<\/em> nor Nuzzi named that person, unnamed sources told Darcy\u2014which the New York Times<\/a> corroborated\u2014that it was Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., whom Nuzzi profiled<\/a> last November (prior to the reported beginning of the relationship). Nuzzi, who did not respond to Vanity Fair<\/em>\u2019s request for comment, told Darcy via a statement that \u201cearlier this year, the nature of some communication\u201d she had with \u201ca former reporting subject turned personal.\u201d<\/p>\n Puck News reports that<\/a> Nuzzi sent nude photos of herself to Kennedy, who since 2014 has been married<\/a> to Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/em> actor Cheryl Hines<\/strong>. Nuzzi had until recently been engaged<\/a> to journalist Ryan Lizza<\/strong>, now at Politico, whom The New Yorker fired in 2017<\/a>, following alleged sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n Regarding Nuzzi, Kennedy \u201cbragged\u201d to friends about the pictures, the Daily Beast reports<\/a>. The boast reportedly made its way to David Haskell<\/strong>, New York<\/em>\u2019s editor-in-chief. In a meeting on September 13, Haskell confronted Nuzzi, who eventually admitted to it. According to Nuzzi, \u201cThe relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict.\u201d She didn\u2019t report on the subject or use them as a source, she says, but she still extended an apology \u201cto those I\u2019ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n In a statement, a Kennedy spokesperson said, \u201cMr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.\u201d According to a spokesperson for New York<\/em>, \u201cthe magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party review\u201d of Nuzzi’s reporting, even though an initial \u201cinternal review of her published work has found no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe regret this violation of our readers\u2019 trust,\u201d the New York<\/em> statement concludes.<\/p>\n Nuzzi, a widely respected reporter who has always been a magnet for attacks on social media, is facing a reputational crisis. Journalists are typically scrupulous about even the appearance of a conflict of interest. It’s a truth often ignored by Hollywood, where rom-coms such as Runaway Bride<\/em> and 27 Dresses<\/em> suggest that reporter\/subject relationships are the rule, not the exception.<\/p>\n But the outcry over the 2019 Clint Eastwood<\/strong> movie Richard Jewell<\/em> illustrates how problematic that trope is when it\u2019s transferred from fiction to reality. In the film based on Atlanta\u2019s 1996 Summer Olympics bombing, real-life Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/em> reporter Kathy Scruggs\u2014who is played in the movie by Olivia Munn<\/strong>\u2014engages in a sexual relationship with the investigation\u2019s lead agent. In the film, it\u2019s pitched as a taken-for-granted part of the business, but the reaction by the journalism community was swift.<\/p>\n Scruggs, who died in 2001, was \u201creduced to a sex-trading object in the film,\u201d the AJC<\/em> said<\/a> at the time of the film\u2019s release. \u201cSuch a portrayal makes it appear that the AJC sexually exploited its staff and\/or that it facilitated or condoned offering sexual gratification to sources in exchange for stories. That is entirely false and malicious, and it is extremely defamatory and damaging.\u201d<\/p>\n Though Warner Brothers, the studio behind Richard Jewell,<\/em> stood by the film, news outlets, including the Washington Post<\/em><\/a>, called the film out for inventing the relationship.
