The specific steps for each vehicle will vary, but in the case of my Sprinter, we ran the thick 16-foot (five-meter) cable up to the busbar in the auxiliary battery fuse box, which meant removing the driver\u2019s seat. So having a way to reliably charge it was critical this summer since I wanted to live and work as remotely as possible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\">Performance<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">After a straightforward installation, it was time to configure the Alternator Charger in the excellent EcoFlow app, which makes monitoring performance both fun and addictive. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The Alternator Charger only sends power to the power station after two conditions are met. First, the charger has to be turned on with a button on the unit itself or from a \u201cstart working\u201d toggle in the EcoFlow app. Then, the voltage measured at the starter battery has to surpass the \u201cstart voltage\u201d threshold you set in the EcoFlow app. If left on, it should automatically charge the attached power station when driving \u2014 but that didn\u2019t quite work for my setup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"my-9 md:my-0\">\n<p><figcaption class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup inline text-gray-13 dark:text-gray-e9 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:text-black [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:text-gray-e9 dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-underline-gray-63 [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-gray-13 dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-gray-63\"><em>With the \u201cstart voltage\u201d set to 13V, you can see the Alternator Charger charging at 800W while driving, but then drop off as the voltage produced by the alternator dropped to 13.0V and below. Setting it to start at 12.5V produced a near constant 800W but also started draining my starter battery when parked. Sigh.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I initially went with the app\u2019s default 13.0V start voltage. Starting the van causes the starter battery\u2019s voltage to jump from about 12.6V &#8211; 12.8V to beyond 14V, thus triggering the 800W charging session. But my van\u2019s fitted with a smart alternator which causes the voltage to fluctuate over time, occasionally dipping below that 13.0V threshold. This causes the Alternator Charger to shut off and on repeatedly, thus reducing the speed at which the Delta Pro is charged.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">To \u201cfix\u201d this, I lowered the charger\u2019s start voltage to 12.5V (it\u2019s limited to 0.5V adjustments) in the app with a predictable side effect \u2014 when I arrived and shut off the motor, the Alternator Charger began depleting my van\u2019s battery and would have continued doing so until it reached the 12.5V threshold and stopped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">That\u2019s not the end of the world, but it is below the 12.6V resting threshold considered healthy for a lead-acid starter battery. EcoFlow does make it easy to manually move that stored energy from the Delta Pro\u2019s battery back to the Sprinter\u2019s by switching the Alternator Charger into Reverse Charge or 100W Battery Maintenance modes \u2014 but this is far from ideal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Ideally, all this would work automatically, so that every time I drive I know that 800W is being fed back into my power station, and I don\u2019t have to worry about the health of my starter battery after I park. Lacking those assurances, I decided to play it safe, and leave the start voltage at 12.5V but toggle the \u201cstart working\u201d switch in the app manually every time I started and stopped driving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Still, after testing EcoFlow\u2019s Alternator Charger, I can tell you <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fus.ecoflow.com%2Fproducts%2F800w-alternator-charger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$599<\/a> is a small price to pay for the peace of mind of having all that power available any time I needed it for two months this summer \u2014 rain or shine, even in the middle of nowhere.
