\nThe 41-year-old \u2013 whose breakout role was playing abused plantation worker Patsey in Sir Steve McQueen\u2019s plantation-era \u201812 Years a Slave\u2019 film \u2013 was born in Mexico and raised mainly in Nairobi, Kenya, with the actress living in the US for the last 20 years.<\/p>\n
\nOpening up about how she has always had a \u201ccomplicated relationship\u201d with her voice, she said on the first episode of her new podcast \u2018Mind Your Own\u2019: \u201cIn order to create this podcast, I had to get very comfortable with my voice.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI made this pact with myself that I would learn how to sound American in a way that would guarantee me a career in acting, because obviously I didn\u2019t know very many people in movies and television with Kenyan accents. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThere was just no market for that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBefore starting the press tour for 2013\u2019s \u201812 Years a Slave\u2019 she said she called her publicists and told them: \u201cI\u2019ve decided that from tomorrow I am going to return to my original accent. I want to send a message that being an African is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cThey had never heard me speak in a Kenyan accent.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe actress also said her mother backed her decision, adding: \u201cShe said, \u2018Your accent is representative of your life experience.\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThat gave me solace, that an accent comes to being from your life\u2026 and just like skin and hair, it can change and it\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe exclaimed about her voice: \u201cI guess this accent is called Lupita! I don\u2019t know who could claim it but me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nLupita recently told how she wanted to diversify her roles by doing comedy.<\/p>\n
\nShe said to People: \u201cI don\u2019t get comedic roles offered to me. Ever. I\u2019m known for dramatic roles, so I tend to get that kind of role. Lots of depth, darkness. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI love depth. I\u2019m not saying I don\u2019t want depth. But darkness and drama, I get that a lot. I am always trying to choose roles that I haven\u2019t played before, roles that will stretch me. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI think comedy is very scary. It\u2019s very hard to achieve, and I want to try my hand at it more.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
