Jimmy Carter, whose wife Rosalynn Carter died last year, is in hospice care<\/p>\n
\nThe former United States President – the longest-living US President in history – is set to celebrate the milestone on October 1, and his grandson Jason Carter has given an update on his the former politician after he entered hospice care in February 2023.<\/p>\n
\nHe told People magazine: “I mean he\u2019s been in hospice for over 19 months now and he has really physically diminished and can\u2019t do much on his own.<\/p>\n
\n“But he is emotionally engaged and still having experiences and laughing, loving.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn June, Jason admitted there had “really been no change” in Jimmy’s condition since he went into hospice in his native Plains, Georgia.<\/p>\n
\nIn November last year, Jimmy’s wife and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter died aged 96.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking to Southern Living, Jason said his grandfather was “experiencing the world as best he can as he continues through this process”.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: “After 77 years of marriage\u2026 I just think none of us really understand what it\u2019s like for him right now.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe have to embrace that fact, that there\u2019s things about the spirit that you just can\u2019t understand.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nAlthough Jimmy isn’t awake every day now, his family still visit frequently.<\/p>\n
\nJason recalled one visit earlier in the year when he asked his grandfather how he was getting on.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “I told him, I said: \u2018Pawpaw, you know, when people ask me how you\u2019re doing I say, \u2018honestly I don\u2019t know’.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd he kind of smiled and he said \u2018I don\u2019t know, myself.\u2019 It was pretty sweet.”<\/p>\n
\nRosalynn died last year, months after being diagnosed with cancer.<\/p>\n
\nAt the time, President Joe Biden and his wife Dr Jill Biden said in a joint statement: “She was a champion for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls; an advocate for mental health and wellness for every person; and a supporter of the often unseen and uncompensated caregivers of our children, aging loved ones, and people with disabilities.<\/p>\n
\n“Time and time again, during the more than four decades of our friendship \u2014 through rigors of campaigns, through the darkness of deep and profound loss \u2014 we always felt the hope, warmth, and optimism of Rosalynn Carter. She will always be in our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
