ESPN reporter Peter Burns<\/strong> is lucky to be alive \u2014 all thanks to the lifesaving work of a college football fan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Burns, who covers the SEC for ESPN, was out to dinner in Columbia, Missouri, on Friday, September 13, preparing to cover the University of Missouri\u2019s football game against Boston College the following afternoon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a series of posts shared via X<\/a> on Monday, September 16, Burns explained the terrifying incident that befell him after he \u201cbegan to choke on a piece of food.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cImmediately I knew it was serious and motioned to our table that I couldn\u2019t breathe,\u201d Burns wrote. \u201cI then waved over a friend to give me the Heimlich and he couldn\u2019t dislodge the food. Then in a panic, I motioned for someone else to try. After about 90 seconds, the second person was unsuccessful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Burns said a nurse came over to help but also had \u201cno luck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Roughly two minutes into the ordeal, Burns recalled he started to lose his vision and black out, calling it a \u201csurreal\u201d experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI could hear everyone talking & doing everything they could to help,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut nothing was working. Right as I was about to lose consciousness, Jack Foster (the 4th person to try) tried. Mr Foster was a youth sports coach & told us later that he had just gone through training for his teams on how to do both CPR & save someone from choking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That fateful training, Burns wrote, is \u201cwhy I am here right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thankful for him and all involved that helped [save] my life that night,\u201d Burns said, while sharing a picture of himself and Foster, who was decked out in a \u201cMissouri Dad\u201d t-shirt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Burns also gave thanks to the Missouri football team\u2019s training staff, who \u201chelped me that night as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe painful aftermath has been slight fractures in 4 ribs but their team helped get me back on my feet,\u201d Burns concluded. \u201cThankful to all involved for their help.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
