Candice Bergen came out swinging on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
She just did it in a somewhat hushed tone.<\/p>\n
At one point during the 2024 Emmy Awards, viewers and attendees were taken by surprise when the legendary actress came out on stage to present the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.<\/p>\n

(Photo by Kevin Winter\/Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nPrior to revealing the name of this year\u2019s winner, Bergen took a jab at Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance while alluding to one of the most famous moments from Murphy Brown.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor 11 years, I had the tremendous privilege of playing the lead in a comedy series called Murphy Brown,\u201d Bergen said before a rapt audience, who had just given her a standing ovation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn one classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother.\u201d<\/p>\n
Added Bergen in sarcastic fashion:<\/p>\n
\u201cOh how far we\u2019ve come\u2026 Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
The actress concluded her joke with a \u201cmeow,\u201d referencing J.D. Vance\u2019s infamous 2021 interview in which he said that \u201cchildless cat ladies\u201d are ruining America.<\/p>\nCandice Bergen received a standing ovation at the 2024 Emmy Awards. Many observers couldn\u2019t help but note the star\u2019s somewhat stilted and slow speech, prompting curiosity over her health status and general well-being.<\/p>\n
One helpful fact, of course, may be that Candice Bergen is 78 years old.<\/p>\n

But Bergen said in 2012 that the stroke impacted her memory, which was never the \u201csame\u201d after the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reality is that I don\u2019t look like I used to look,\u201d the actress also said back then. \u201cI just don\u2019t care enough, and in a way it\u2019s saved me.<\/p>\n
Bergen emphasized this same point in her 2015 memoir, writing simply:<\/p>\n
\u201cLet me just come right out and say it \u2013 I am fat.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the past 15 years \u2026 I have put on 30 pounds. I live to eat. None of this \u2018eat to live\u2019 stuff for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the age of 78, Bergen also lives to make us laugh and, all things considered, is doing very well.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re not sure if the same can be said of J.D. Vance.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
