The actress, 30, stars as Rona in her latest film \u2018The Outrun\u2019, an adaptation of Amy Liptrot\u2019s 2016 memoir of the same name about the writer\u2019s recovery from alcoholism, and Saoirse has now said taking the part made her reassess her own relationship with drinking.<\/p>\n
She told The Sunday Times: \u201cI\u2019m more conscious of my intake \u2013 and there\u2019s more people of my generation who are choosing not to drink any more because of how it makes them feel.\u201d<\/p>\n
The actress added alcoholism is a world she knows \u201creally well\u201d \u2013 admitting she has \u201cbeen on the receiving end of the pain caused by it\u201d.<\/p>\n
She also admitted she has seen people she loves \u201cchange because of addiction\u201d, adding: \u201cThere\u2019s a helplessness you feel when you watch someone you love \u2013 friends my age and one in particular who I\u2019m close to\u2026 go through that. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhat will be etched in my brain forever is that switch, when the glaze goes over someone\u2019s eyes and they are gone.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIf you\u2019ve become second best to alcohol you become resentful, so for this role I needed to put my own feeling towards it to one side. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd I needed not to be angry about that any more.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDespite the pain she had witnessed due to the condition, Saoirse added alcoholism was a topic she \u201cwanted to explore at some stage\u201d in her life to better understand and heal her trauma related to it.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI don\u2019t think I would have been secure enough as a person to take something like that on even a few years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nSaoirse, who grew up in Co Carlow, Ireland, said children she knew would drink vodka or cider in a field because they were \u201cbored\u201d.<\/p>\n
\n\u2018The Outrun\u2019 also stars Stephen Dillane, Saskia Reeves and Paapa Essiedu, with a synopsis for the movie \u2013 which is out in cinemas from 4 October \u2013 saying: \u201cAfter living life on the edge in London, Rona attempts to come to terms with her troubled past. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cShe returns to the wild beauty of Scotland\u2019s Orkney Islands \u2013 where she grew up \u2013 hoping to heal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
