Rory McIlroy<\/strong><\/a> has explained why he needed to take a hiatus from playing golf.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot going on this year from golf-wise and then, obviously, personal-wise as well,\u201d McIlroy, 35, told Patrick Kielty<\/strong> during the Saturday, September 14, episode of The Late Late Show<\/a>. <\/i>\u201cSometimes life can get a lot and it can get too much, and I had to take a little bit of a break and get away from the game more than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to McIlroy, he needed to take space from \u201cthe business of golf\u201d to realize his priorities.<\/p>\n

\u201c[What\u2019s] actually important to me is friends, family [and] enjoying myself,\u201d the pro athlete said. \u201cEnjoy the fact that you were this little boy in Holywood, and you\u2019ve grown up to be whatever it is that I am, and I need to enjoy that time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRory McIlroy and wife Erica Stoll sparked a romance after years of friendship. The pro golfer initially met Stoll in 2012 while he was still dating tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. (The exes split in 2014 after three years and were briefly engaged.) \u201cThe thing I love about it is that we were friends before anything [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

McIlroy had announced in June that he planned to take a few weeks off<\/a> from golf tournaments. That same month, McIlroy filed to dismiss his divorce from wife Erica Stoll<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Us Weekly <\/i>confirmed on June 11 that McIlroy filed a notice of voluntary dismissal<\/a> in Palm Beach, Florida, ending his request for a divorce. The filing was closed out the same day.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together,\u201d McIlroy told The Guardian <\/i>in a statement at the time. \u201cThankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n

McIlroy and Stoll have been married since 2017, during which they welcomed daughter Poppy. Seven years later, news broke in May that McIlroy had filed for divorce<\/a> and claimed that their marriage was \u201cirretrievably broken.\u201d He also requested joint custody of their 3-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n
