Shawn Mendes<\/strong><\/a> appeared to dip of out of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards<\/a> early following his \u201cNobody Knows\u201d performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mendes, 26, uploaded a video of himself smoking what appeared to be a cigarette and partying with friends as the awards show \u2014 hosted on Wednesday, September 11, at the USB Arena in New York \u2014 continued to go on. While it\u2019s unclear when Mendes left the VMAs, the singer performed earlier on in the evening, just before Sabrina Carpenter<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mendes\u2019 name has been uttered in the same sentence as Carpenter, 25, following the release of her Short n\u2019 Sweet<\/em><\/a> album late last month. After the record was released, fans couldn\u2019t stop talking about Mendes and his possible connection to Carpenter, which appeared to be laid out in her song lyrics. (Carpenter took the stage on Wednesday to sing a medley of \u201cPlease Please Please,\u201d \u201cTaste\u201d and \u201cEspresso.\u201d)<\/p>\n

To make things even more sticky, Mendes\u2019 ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello<\/strong><\/a> was also at the VMAs on Wednesday and performed her song \u201cGodspeed.\u201d<\/a> Fans are convinced that this song choice was a shot at Mendes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe MTV Video Music Awards are back \u2014 meaning Hollywood\u2019s favorite artists delivered a fierce and fun red carpet. For the 2024 awards ceremony, which took place at the UBS Arena in New York City on Wednesday, September 11, stars including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat and more were nominated for a [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

TLDR: Mendes and Cabello, 27, broke up. He reportedly moved on with Carpenter but eventually reconciled \u2014 albeit briefly \u2014 with Cabello. They all appeared to sing songs about each other at the VMAs. Just like most singers, they\u2019ve all declined to reveal who their songs are about, but some lines appear to be pretty telling.<\/p>\n

Mendes even appeared to hint at this in an Instagram post<\/a> before the VMAs started.<\/p>\n

\u201cPulling up to my own funeral,\u201d he captioned a series of photos, which raised some eyebrows.<\/p>\n

Carpenter was first romantically linked<\/a> to Mendes in February 2023, but Mendes has since denied that there was anything going on between them that went deeper than friendship.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not dating,\u201d he told Dutch TV\u2019s RTL Boulevard<\/em> the month after rumors started swirling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By April 2023, however, Mendes had reunited with his ex-girlfriend<\/a> Cabello, which pushed the idea of a relationship with Carpenter by the wayside. (Mendes and Cabello first dated from 2019 to 2021.)<\/p>\n

Since Carpenter released Short n\u2019 Sweet<\/em>, questions have started to rise about what really went down between her and Mendes. In one track titled \u201cCoincidence,\u201d she is seemingly singing about a lover who got back with an ex shortly after they dated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second I put my head on your chest \/ She knew, she\u2019s got a real sixth sense,\u201d the song\u2019s lyrics read. \u201cNow her name comes up once, then it comes up twice \/ And without her even bein\u2019 here, she\u2019s back in your life \/ Now she\u2019s in the same damn city on the same damn night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of the Wednesday, September 11, ceremony at UBS Arena in New York, Taylor Swift led with 12 total nominations, followed by Post Malone with nine. Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Eminem racked up six [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There also might be a hint hidden in Carpenter\u2019s \u201cJuno,\u201d which connects to a line in Mendes\u2019 most recent release, \u201cWhy Why Why.\u201d<\/a> The song that\u2019s made the most headlines as of late though is Carpenter\u2019s \u201cTaste,\u201d<\/a> which seems to be her message to a former fling.<\/p>\n
