Michael Sheen<\/strong><\/a> and Ruth Wilson<\/strong><\/a> recall being \u201cgobsmacked\u201d by the infamous BBC Newsnight<\/em> interview<\/a> between Prince Andrew<\/strong> and Emily Maitlis<\/strong> long before starring in A Very Royal Scandal<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quite hard to exactly remember how I first felt. My biggest takeaway was: How on earth did this happen? Why did he put himself in this position?\u201d Wilson, 42, told Us Weekly<\/em> exclusively ahead of the Prime Video show\u2019s premiere. \u201cHe has every opportunity not to do that, and he did. It\u2019s extraordinary. I watched it a few times, actually, before I took this job. I\u2019d seen it a few times because, I thought, it\u2019s such a fascinating study of an individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson took on the role of Maitlis for the three-part miniseries, set to premiere on Thursday, September 19. Viewers will see the leadup to and fallout following Prince Andrew\u2019s 2019 interview in which he denied knowing Virginia Giuffre<\/strong>, who accused him of sexual assault<\/a>. The accusations were revealed after Andrew\u2019s connection with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein<\/strong> went public.<\/p>\n

Sheen, 55, took on the role of disgraced royal family member Andrew for A Very Royal Scandal<\/em>. He recalled thinking \u201cthis isn\u2019t like any other interview I\u2019ve seen\u201d upon watching it live five years ago.<\/p>\n

The Duke of York is the second son of the late\u00a0Queen Elizabeth II and\u00a0Prince Philip. Unlike his brother, Prince Charles, Andrew has [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t question it so much at the time, and I just sort of watched,\u201d he recalled. \u201c[I] saw the memes afterwards and the jokes and the late-night shows \u2014 all that cultural stuff that happened \u2014 but I\u2019d never really, really thought about why [it was] so unlike anything I\u2019d seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Playing Andrew gave him the opportunity<\/a> to \u201csort of answer those questions,\u201d or at least grasp an idea about what went wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a world where interviews are so controlled and stage-managed \u2014 particularly with royal family and politicians \u2014 he was someone who was a person of power and privilege, voluntarily putting themself into the line of fire, and being made to be accountable for something that they had done or not done,\u201d he continued. \u201cPeople just don\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
