Royal biographer Margaret Holder made the remark in the wake of the row that has erupted after \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019 actor Sir McKellen, 85, made a string of digs at the Royal Family \u2013 including branding Prince Harry<\/a> dim and Queen Elizabeth \u201cquite mad\u201d and \u201crude\u201d.<\/p>\n

She told the Daily Express as calls grow for the star to hand back his knighthood: \u201cHer Majesty the Queen was certainly not \u2018quite mad\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost people from staff to politicians say she was mentally sharp to the end of her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs for her being \u2018rude\u2019 when Sir Ian McKellen<\/a> received his medal, the Queen usually had to move on to other people waiting for their medals, working a routine which made sure everyone being decorated had a few moments with her.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cShe tried to treat celebrities and ordinary people the same way and most people treasured that time with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nRoyal biographer Christopher Wilson added about Sir Ian\u2019s comments: \u201cIf the Queen was rude to him, which I doubt, I expect he imagined it. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cThere are almost no recorded instances of her being rude to anybody. He probably asked for it.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cSir Ian may be a good actor but he always has to be the centre of attention. And, sadly for him, on that occasion the Queen was infinitely more important than a lucky thespian with a malicious tongue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nSir Ian was knighted for services to the performing arts in 1991 and Queen Elizabeth II appointed him Companion of Honour for his services to drama and equality in 2008. <\/p>\n

\nHe said about the Queen: \u201cI\u2019m sure she was quite mad at the end. And on the few occasions I met her she was quite rude.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWhen I received a medal for acting, she said, \u2018You\u2019ve been doing this for an awfully long time\u2019.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cI said, \u2018Well, not as long as you\u2019. I got a royal smile for that, but then she said, \u2018Does anyone still actually go to the theatre?\u2019 <\/p>\n

\n\u201cThat\u2019s bloody rude when you\u2019re giving someone a medal for acting. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cIt meant, \u2018Does anyone care a f*** about you because I don\u2019t. Now off you go!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\nSir Ian added about the Queen\u2019s late husband Prince Philip he was \u201cdeeply, deeply eccentric\u201d possibly \u201cdeeply unhappy\u201d.<\/p>\n

\nHe said: \u201cSame with the present king. He sort of survives, but he is clearly damaged. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cAs for (Prince) Harry, he\u2019s probably not bright enough or doesn\u2019t have the right friends to really help himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
