James Gandolfini<\/a> drunkenly vowed \u201cevery other day\u201d to quit \u2018The Sopranos\u2019.<\/p>\n

James Gandolfini drunkenly vowed \u2018every other day\u2019 to quit \u2018The Sopranos\u2019<\/p>\n

The actor played mob boss Tony Soprano in the smash HBO mafia drama from 1999 to 2007 alongside stars including Edie Falco<\/a>, 61, before he was killed by a heart attack aged 51 in 2013 after years of drug and alcohol issues that often caused havoc with the making of the show, created by 79-year-old David Chase.<\/p>\n

His co-star Steven Van Zandt, 73, who played Tony\u2019s \u2018consiglieri\u2019 Silvio Dante on the HBO hit, has now opened up about how James struggled making the series.<\/p>\n

He says on new documentary \u2018Wise Guy: David Chase<\/a> and The Sopranos\u2019: “Every other day, we would go to a bar. We would have the exact same conversation. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe would get drunk. He\u2019d say, \u2018I\u2019m done. I\u2019m not going back\u2019.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cI would say, \u2018Okay. You\u2019ve got a hundred people depending on you here\u2019. \u201cHe\u2019s like, \u2018Yeah, yeah, okay\u2019. He would come back. But a few times, he would disappear for a few days. You know, it just got to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u2018Wise Guy\u2019 also includes interviews with \u2018Sopranos\u2019 creator David, who recently said James left him mesmerised with his \u201cotherworldly\u201d eyes.<\/p>\n

\nHe told a CBS News retrospective on the creation of the landmark show in honour of its 25thanniversary this year: \u201cHe\u2019s incredible. Well, the whole thing\u2019s about his face and about his eyes, actually. \u201cThere\u2019s something about his eyes that \u2013 it was otherworldly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nDavid also said the humour in the show was so prevalent he could \u201cnever\u201d figure out whether it was a comedy.<\/p>\n

\nHe added: \u201cI guess it\u2019s like life. I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nDavid previously told People he was glad the show\u2019s fanbase was still going strong, saying it left him with a \u201ctremendous sense of gratitude\u201d.<\/p>\n

\nHe added: \u201cI can\u2019t remember this happening with any other television show ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nDavid also said about James\u2019 performance: \u201cLook at the show, and there you see it. It\u2019s a clich\u00e9 to call that stuff magic, but he was totally inhabiting that fictional creature. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cIt\u2019s the best thing I\u2019ve ever done. It\u2019s probably the best thing I ever will do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
