A professional milestone\u2026 and a personal tragedy.<\/p>\n
Nicole Kidman announced the death of her mother Janelle on September 6, the same date on which she won Best Actress for her role in Babygirl<\/em> at the Venice Film Festival.<\/p>\nKidman\u2019s mom was 84 years old.<\/p>\n<\/noscript>Nicole Kidman attends Los Angeles Premiere of Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Perfect Couple\u201d on September 4, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter\/Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe sad news was confirmed via a statement read on stage by Halina Rejn, who directed Kidman in the aforementioned film.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after, that my beautiful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed,\u201d Kidman\u2019s message said. \u201cI am in shock and I have to go to my family.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement continued, <\/p>\n
\u201cBut this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me and she made me. I\u2019m beyond grateful that I that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina. Kidman\u2019s mother, who worked as a nursing instructor, had suffered health issues in recent years. <\/p>\n
In 2022, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Academy Award winner said that she returned to her family\u2019s native Australia to be with her sick parent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re down here primarily to take care of my mother,\u201d the now-57-year-old said in an NPR interview in January of that year. \u201cAnd to have her surrounded by her grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n
Added Kidman back then:<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m at the place where I\u2019m being given the chance to view the world\u2014because of how close we are, my mom is giving me the chance to view the world through an 81-year-old woman\u2019s eyes. That is so beneficial right now because she\u2019s so cognizant.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe has every faculty, brain faculty, available. She hasn\u2019t lost anything. \u201cShe\u2019s given me the fire to pursue the career I have because I\u2019ve always wanted to please her,\u201d Kidman told the outlet, according to the Hollywood Reporter. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut she also carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths\u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cMum didn\u2019t necessarily get the career that she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have opportunities that were equal. That\u2019s given me my life. And she gave me my life, she and my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n
