Agents typically have to inspect the bag, determine what the prohibited item is and allow the traveler to decide whether to discard the item or take it back to their car.<\/p>\n<p>But what exactly are the TSA liquid rules, and why do they exist? You&#8217;ll find comparable rules as you travel internationally \u2014 though the U.K. is <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/uk-airports-new-security-scanners-liquid-rule-2024\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moving toward removing<\/a> these restrictions.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"what-is-the-tsa-3-1-1-rule\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">What is the TSA 3-1-1 rule?<\/h2>\n<p>The TSA&#8217;s ban on liquids \u2014 or at least large quantities of them \u2014 is governed by what&#8217;s known as the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/frequently-asked-questions\/what-3-1-1-liquids-rule\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3-1-1 rule<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The decades-old policy states that:<\/p>\n<div class=\"&#10;        EmailSignUp_container__qYzYT&#10;        undefined&#10;        EmailSignUp_isLoading__i_qm0&#10;      \"><picture class=\"EmailSignUp_graphic__zgpFm\"><source media=\"screen and (max-width: 767px)\" srcset=\"\/images\/EmailSignUp\/daily-mob.svg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/images\/EmailSignUp\/daily-dt.svg\"\/><\/picture>\n<div class=\"EmailSignUp_form__C8FWb\">\n<p>Daily Newsletter<\/p>\n<p>Reward your inbox with the TPG Daily newsletter<\/p>\n<p>Join over 700,000 readers for breaking news, in-depth guides and exclusive deals from TPG\u2019s experts<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Liquids must be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces, or roughly 100 milliliters (that&#8217;s the &#8220;3&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li>All containers must be placed in one clear, quart-size plastic bag (&#8220;1&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li>Each passenger is only allowed one such plastic bag (&#8220;1&#8221;).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These rules govern liquids, gels and aerosol products ranging from toothpaste to shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash and sunscreen  \u2014 among other products.<\/p>\n<p>Liquid products larger than 3.4 ounces must be placed in a checked bag. However, you must declare those items to security officers at the checkpoint for inspection.<\/p>\n<p>The agency asks travelers with larger amounts of medically necessary liquids to remove them from the carry-on bag and place them in a bin or bowl. The TSA has a variety of alternative screening methods it can use.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"what-can-you-bring-through-a-tsa-checkpoint\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">What can you bring through a TSA checkpoint?<\/h2>\n<p>You can bring creamy cheeses, liquid chocolate, liquid coffee, creamy dips and spreads, gravy, honey, hummus, ice cream, jam, jelly, juice, syrup, peanut butter, salad dressing, sauce, salsa, soda, soup, and yogurt as long as they are in a container of less than 3.4 ounces, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/whatcanibring\/all-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the TSA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can bring your water bottle with you, even if it weighs more than 3.4 ounces \u2014 as long as it&#8217;s empty. This can also be a great way to save money at the airport since many now have post-security filling stations for reusable water bottles.<\/p>\n<p>When in doubt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/whatcanibring\/all-list\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">consult the TSA&#8217;s list of what you can carry<\/a> through the airport and check with your airline.<\/p>\n<p>Or, better yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/tsa-app\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">download the MyTSA app<\/a>.
