The front screen looks like, well, a normal phone screen. I can\u2019t say the same about the previous Pixel Fold\u2019s front screen or six generations of Samsung\u2019s Z Fold. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is also light enough that I can forget I\u2019m using a folding phone for whole stretches of time. Thankfully, the ones that are left are just folding phone problems. The cameras aren\u2019t as good as the cameras on the regular Pixel 9 series. It\u2019s still thicker and heavier than even the biggest slab-style phones. It won\u2019t be as easy to repair, and it\u2019s twice the price of a garden-variety flagship phone. If you\u2019re looking for reasons to talk yourself out of a $1,799 purchase, you\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But for someone who\u2019s feeling adventurous and isn\u2019t concerned with the drawbacks of folding phone life, I\u2019m sorry to say, you should probably spend $1,800 on this phone. The front screen feels like using a normal screen. It\u2019s not much heavier than a normal phone. The inner screen is big. Everything is the way it should be.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">This Pixel Fold may be a \u201cPro\u201d phone, but it shares screen specs with the standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24232480\/google-pixel-9-review-screen-camera-battery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pixel 9<\/a> and not the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24225221\/google-pixel-9-pro-xl-review-ai-gemini-screen-battery-camera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pixel 9 Pro<\/a>. All three devices have a 6.3-inch OLED, but the regular 9 and the 9 Pro Fold have 1080p resolutions and top out at 1,800 nits in peak brightness mode. The 9 Pro\u2019s screen is just a little sharper and brighter, so that\u2019s a tradeoff you\u2019ll need to make if you want the Pixel that folds in half.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The outer screen isn\u2019t quite as \u201cPro\u201d as it could be, but the inner screen is where the money\u2019s at, and it\u2019s much brighter this year. That\u2019s an important improvement on a device that\u2019s supposed to, you know, go outside with you all the time. What\u2019s the fun in flexing that big display sitting outside of the coffee shop if you have to squint at it? The boosted peak brightness of 2,700 nits makes it much more comfortable to use outside than the previous generation\u2019s screen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">There are some camera hardware tradeoffs. The regular Pixel 9 phones all have a nicer 50-megapixel main camera with a bigger sensor compared to the 9 Pro Fold\u2019s 48-megapixel camera. There\u2019s not a massive difference, but you can squeeze a little more detail in low-light shots out of the regular Pixel 9\u2019s camera. The foldable Pixel\u2019s telephoto lens isn\u2019t quite as good, either, and low-light photos compared to the standard Pixel 9\u2019s 5x zoom are noticeably softer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It\u2019s a minor feature, but \u201cMade You Look\u201d \u2014 which uses the outer display to show an adorable animation to catch a kid\u2019s attention \u2014 works <em>exactly<\/em> as advertised. Yet it uses the outer screen\u2019s selfie camera, which isn\u2019t great in low light. Don\u2019t get me wrong, this is a good camera system overall. But it\u2019s an area where basically all foldables lag behind slab phones, what with all the internal space needed for moving parts. We can\u2019t have it all \u2014 at least not yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And sorry to keep being a bummer, but you\u2019ll want to consider durability if you\u2019re buying a folding phone versus a slab phone. Its IPX8 rating means the 9 Pro Fold can withstand water immersion, but you\u2019re on your own if a grain of sand works its way into the hinge. Let\u2019s talk about the best part of this phone: using the big screen. The phone\u2019s new, taller format \u2014 along with improved rendering from some apps \u2014 makes for a much better inner screen experience. Some look promising, and some of them are downright scary! But Samsung\u2019s foldable UI lets you do this, and I\u2019m just a little sad that I can\u2019t have a tiny Spotify player in the corner of the screen while I run two other apps like I can on the Galaxy Z Fold 6.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Still! Using the big screen is a joy. I\u2019m more inclined to use the 9 Pro Fold for complex tasks that would be annoying on a regular phone. Opening Chrome and seeing all my tabs in a row at the top of the screen fills my heart with joy. I can refer to a page on <em>Icy Veins <\/em>while I arrange my paragon points in <em>Diablo IV, <\/em>rather than squinting at a little screen. Those little things add up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I\u2019ve also been impressed with the 9 Pro Fold\u2019s battery life. It\u2019s not quite as robust as the standard Pixel 9 models, but it comfortably lasts through a moderate day with lots of GPS navigation, hotspot use, and time on the inner screen. It\u2019s more like a normal phone than ever, but it\u2019s also not <em>completely<\/em> like using a normal phone. By opting for a phone that folds, you\u2019re still making tradeoffs, particularly in the camera hardware. The phone\u2019s long-term durability is also an unknown \u2014 literally no one has owned a Pixel folding phone for more than a year at this point. Foldable ownership isn\u2019t for the faint of heart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the most rewarding folding phone I\u2019ve ever used. Using the phone while it\u2019s closed feels way less cumbersome and much more normal than the previous Pixel Fold or a Galaxy Z Fold.
