Now, he\u2019s built a crystal ball filled with shimmering, spinning volumetric light \u2014 and of course he\u2019s playing <em>Doom<\/em> on it. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But not just any <em>Doom<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moddb.com\/mods\/doom-voxel-project\/addons\/voxel-doom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Voxel Doom<\/a>, where every dot of the game\u2019s graphics <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voxel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lives in 3D space<\/a>, just like the dots of the volumetric display he\u2019s created. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As he explains on YouTube, the physical illusion is fairly simple: \u201cIt\u2019s like a hologram fan, but instead of spinning a 1D strip to make a 2D image, it spins a 2D panel to make a 3D image.\u201d On his Mastodon, he breaks it down a bit more <a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@ancientjames\/112597046453214197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with visual aids<\/a>: <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Brown\u2019s been working on this for over a year now: if I\u2019m not mistaken, he introduced the project in August 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@ancientjames\/110948067275036967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by channeling his inner Doc Brown<\/a>, saying \u201cIf my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 300rpm you\u2019re going to see some serious shit.\u201d But he\u2019s since discovered it needs to spin a good bit faster than that for a smooth image, particularly when he\u2019s trying to film it.
