The flame has fizzled out.\u00a0Sex\/Life<\/em> has been canceled at Netflix after two seasons.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The decision not to renew the erotic drama comes just over one month after the release of the show\u2019s second season, which consisted of six episodes \u2014 two less than season 1 \u2014 and weeks after star Sarah Shahi<\/strong><\/a>, who portrays lead Billie Connelly, signed on as the lead for ABC\u2019s newest legal drama, Judgement<\/em>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A Netflix spokesperson told Deadline<\/em><\/a> on Friday, April 7, that Sex\/Life\u2019s<\/em> second installment brought the series \u201cto a natural close\u201d by \u201cwrapping up the storylines for key characters whose relationships come to a happy conclusion.\u201d The rep added the streamer is \u201cproud of the show and the work put\u00a0into\u00a0it by producers, cast and crew.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Sex\/Life<\/em> premiered in June 2021 and followed repressed mom of two Billie (Shahi) as she navigated a love triangle with her husband Cooper Connelly (Mike Vogel<\/strong><\/a>) and her first great love Brad Simon (Adam Demos<\/strong><\/a>). The show, created by Stacy Rukeyser<\/strong> \u2014 who also serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer \u2014 focused on female agency and desire.<\/span><\/p>\n Season 2, which dropped last month, showed Billie reuniting with her ex, wrapping up with the two\u00a0reciting\u00a0<\/b>nuptials on a beach. Rukeyser, however, told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> that Billie and Brad\u2019s happily ever after was never meant to serve as a series finale.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI know there are always more stories to tell with these characters in the<\/span>\u00a0<\/i>Sex\/Life<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/i>universe, and I hope we get the chance to tell those stories,\u201d she told THR\u00a0<\/em>one\u00a0<\/b>week after season 2 premiered. \u201cIt was important that we get to a meaningful place with each character this season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Earlier this month, Shahi, 43 \u2013 who has been dating Demos, 37, since December 2020<\/a> \u2014 revealed that she \u201cdidn\u2019t have the same support\u201d while filming Sex\/Life\u2019s<\/em> sophomore season as she did when the show premiered.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt became a much different thing for me, and I\u2019m not afraid to say that. I struggled with the material,\u201d she explained during an episode of the \u201cNot Skinny But Not Fat<\/a>\u201d podcast. \u201cI mean, I\u2019m never going to work for Netflix again now after saying all this. I just can\u2019t lie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n She added, \u201cIt was just challenging, but that\u2019s part of what I do. I\u2019m not always gonna get along or agree with a filmmaker. I\u2019m not always gonna like what I have to do or say, but that\u2019s my job, is to make it believable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Person of Interest<\/em> alum also shared her\u00a0disappointment\u00a0in not getting to have more scenes with Demos \u2014 who had a scaled-back role in season 2 \u2014 despite the twosome ending up together in the end.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn the second season, it was a bummer,\u201d Shahi said on the podcast. \u201cI was bummed that I wasn\u2019t able to work with him as much<\/a> because I really liked our stories. And I liked working with him. And he was a brilliant scene partner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Despite all her expectations not being met. Shahi opened up exclusively to Us Weekly<\/em> in June 2021 about how liberating the role of Billie is for her to play \u2014 especially when it comes to how sex is handled through the arc of her story.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI have always been trying to get into projects like this<\/a>. I just never got hired,\u201d the actress shared. \u201cEveryone was always trying to hire me to be the tough chick and paid me to keep my clothes on. I\u2019ve been wanting to be a bit risky and cry and show emotional vulnerability for a while now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Texas native, who was previously married to Steve Howey<\/strong><\/a> from 2009 to 2020, noted that having so many women working behind the scenes allowed the experience to feel more meaningful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI think once I found out too that this is a piece that was written by a woman \u2014 all the writers are women, [it\u2019s] directed by all women, it was just such an ability to stand for something, to stand for femininity, to be able to be a voice in a way that I felt was really important for women,\u201d she told\u00a0Us<\/em>\u00a0at the time. \u201cYou can be a mom and still want to be the sexual goddess<\/a> at the same time.
