Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong><\/a> and Lady Gaga<\/strong><\/a> are opening up about the physical transformations they underwent to film The Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to talk through specifics of the diet, because I just think nobody wants to hear that. But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn\u2019t have last time,\u201d Phoenix, 49, said during a Venice International Film Festival press conference on Wednesday, September 4, per Variety<\/i><\/a>. \u201cSo it felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe . . .\u00a0 I\u2019m now 49, I probably shouldn\u2019t do this again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phoenix, who stars as The Joker\/Arthur Fleck in the DC origin films<\/a>, declined to offer further details about his Folie \u00e0 Deux <\/i>weight loss but said that Gaga, 38, had a similar experience. (Gaga, who sat beside Phoenix at the press conference, plays Harley Quinn in the sequel.)<\/p>\n

\u201cStefani also lost a lot of weight,\u201d he said, using the pop star\u2019s birth name. \u201cI remember when I first met you in rehearsals and then you went away and when you came back, you lost a lot of weight. It was really impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Gaga, she thinks that the two actors \u201ctransformed into [their] characters over a period of time\u201d and sought to \u201chone in every kind of detail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phoenix had similarly lost weight for the first Joker<\/i> film, revealing in 2020 that he lost 52 pounds for his role in the 2019 movie. At the time, Phoenix explained that he mainly ate lettuce and steamed vegetables<\/a> to slim down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know I was responsible last time for talking about it, but it\u2019s difficult to do so that becomes your obsession because you\u2019re working the entire time to get to a certain weight,\u201d Phoenix recalled on Wednesday. \u201cSo then you end up talking about it, and then it just sounds like an actor going on and on about how much weight they lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not long after Joker director Todd Phillips confirmed he would be writing and directing a sequel, Gaga confirmed her casting by sharing a video of her and Phoenix\u2019s silhouettes dancing via Instagram. \u201cJoker: Folie \u00e0 Deux,\u201d she captioned the August 2022 post. \u201c10.04.24.\u201d [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He continued, \u201cBy the end of that [press tour] run, I was so sick of myself and angry at myself for making such a big deal about that part because you just do what you\u2019re f\u2013king supposed to do. So this time I was like, \u2018I\u2019m not going to do that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
