All good things must come to an end. The Resident<\/em><\/a> has been canceled at Fox after six seasons.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Viewers have said their final goodbye to the doctors and nurses at Chasten Memorial Hospital,\u00a0the network revealed on Thursday, April 6.\u00a0The series, which premiered in January 2018, followed Matt\u00a0Czuchry<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>as Dr. Conrad Hawkins as he faced personal and professional challenges while fighting for his patient\u2019s health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Bruce Greenwood<\/strong> (Dr. Randolph Bell), Manish Dayal<\/strong> (Dr. Devon Pravesh), Malcolm-Jamal Warner<\/strong><\/a> (Dr. AJ Austin), Jane Leeves<\/strong> (Dr. Kit Voss), Jessica Lucas<\/strong> (Dr. Billie Sutton), Anuja Joshi<\/strong> (Leela Devi) and Miles Fowler<\/strong> (Trevor) also starred.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Season 6, which finished airing in January,\u00a0was down 27 percent in ratings in its major demographic from 2022 and 69 percent from the show\u2019s premiere season, which was comprised of only 13 episodes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>At the time, executive producer Andrew Chapman<\/strong> <\/a>told TV Insider<\/em><\/a> that he likely wouldn\u2019t know the show\u2019s fate until April or May.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c[We] really thought hard about how we would construct storylines that would give closure to the season, but if it had to be a series finale, would give our audience and our fans some closure to the whole series, too,\u201d Chapman explained to the outlet.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In August 2021, news broke that Emily VanCamp<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0who starred on the series\u00a0as Dr. Nic Nevin\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>was leaving the show after four seasons. In the second episode of season 5, Nic suffered a brain injury from a car accident that\u00a0ultimately took her life. VanCamp, 36, ultimately returned for the season 5 finale<\/a> in May 2022 to wrap up her character\u2019s story line.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBecause so much of the season thematically had been about grief and loss and coming to terms with mortality and how Conrad is moving on from his relationship with her<\/a> and the time jump and being a single dad with Gigi, it felt like the right thing to do,\u201d Chapman explained during an interview with ET Canada<\/em><\/a> at the time. \u201cWe reached out to her and she was super excited to come back. She had not had a chance to say goodbye to everybody on the show, the crew, all the other actors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n He continued, \u201cThe beginning of the season, we knew that we were going to lose Emily in this season<\/a>, but we didn\u2019t know when we were going to lose her. We lost her in episode 3 and we really had to scramble, and it didn\u2019t give us the closure of the relationship that we had wanted,\u201d he shared. \u201cWe thought we were going to have her for a couple more episodes and it wasn\u2019t anybody\u2019s fault. She had a medical issue and she had to deal with it, and we fully understood. But we really didn\u2019t get to close the loop with her, so to speak.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The cancellation of\u00a0The Residen<\/em>t\u00a0comes days after Fox ordered a new medical drama, titled Doc<\/em>, straight to series\u00a0for the 2023-24 season, per Variety<\/em><\/a>. The show will focus on\u00a0Dr. Amy Elias, Chief of Internal and Family Medicine at the fictional Westside Hospital in Minneapolis,\u00a0as she navigates her life after a brain injury erases her memory of the last eight years.\u00a0<\/span>She must\u00a0face an\u00a0<\/b>unfamiliar world where she has no recollection of patients she\u2019s treated, colleagues she\u2019s crossed, the soulmate she divorced, the man she now loves and the tragedy that caused her to push everyone away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
