James Ivory says coming out didn\u2019t seem \u2018all that important\u2019 when he was at the height of his filmmaking glory<\/p>\n
The Oscar-winning gay icon, 96, made more than 20 much-loved movies including \u2018The Remains of the Day\u2019 with his late romantic and producing partner Ismail Merchant, who died in 2005 aged 68 following surgery for abdominal ulcers.<\/p>\n
He told People about the concept of being out of the closet in Hollywood as a \u201cgay filmmaker\u201d being a modern concept at the peak of their success: \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a new idea. When (Ismail and I) were making all those films \u2013 and, you know, we made over 20 features together \u2013 that was not something that seemed all that important.<\/p>\n
The success of James and Ismail\u2019s Ivory Productions is chronicled in director Stephen Soucy\u2019s new documentary \u2018Merchant Ivory\u2019. <\/p>\n
James added when he was making films such as \u2018A Room with a View\u2019 and \u2018Howards End\u2019 he and his partner were more focused on the work than talking about their sexuality.<\/p>\n
\nTheir careers saw them work with a raft of top talent including Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dame Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Vanessa Redgrave and more.<\/p>\n
\nJames said he and Ismail always focused on \u201cwhat we were doing and how we were doing it, the kinds of stories that we chose to tell and the kinds of actors that we wanted to have\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nMost of the filmmaking pair\u2019s fans weren\u2019t even aware they were gay until recently.<\/p>\n
\nThe awareness is mainly down to the success of gay coming-of-age drama \u2018Call Me by Your Name\u2019 that James made in 2017, and which starred Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet and Armie Hammer.<\/p>\n
\nIn interviews to promote the movie, James said being openly gay during the production of his classic films in the 1980s and \u201990s classics would have been \u201cunthinkable\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHe also told The Guardian in 2018 his and Ismail\u2019s privacy regarding their sexuality was a way to protect his partner, adding: \u201cThat is not something that an Indian Muslim would ever say publicly or in print. Ever! <\/p>\n
\n\u201cYou have to remember that Ismail was an Indian citizen living in Bombay, with a deeply conservative Muslim family there. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s not the sort of thing he was going to broadcast. Since we were so close and lived most of our lives together, I wasn\u2019t about to undermine him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
