NCIS<\/em><\/a> has paved the way for several successful spinoffs<\/a>, but the mothership series is still going strong as it heads into season 22.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have a slogan yet but \u2018take it to the limit\u2019 I would say is what I want to do with the characters for Season 22,\u201d showrunner Steven D. Binder<\/strong> told Parade<\/em><\/a> following the season 21 finale, which aired in May.<\/p>\n

Binder noted that there was \u201csome closure and some cliff[hangers]\u201d during the last season, teasing that fans will have to tune in to see what happens next.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of things were resolved, and some new things were opened up, some character cliffhangers, but we wanted to resolve the case,\u201d he added. \u201cCliffhangers are titillating but also aggravating. We were less aggravating and gave the audience some peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe NCIS family just keeps growing \u2014 with six existing or former shows and two more on the way as of 2024. While many fans might think the naval intelligence-based franchise began with NCIS, that\u2019s not the case. The flagship NCIS show was actually JAG, which debuted on NBC in 1995. The biggest cliffhanger included Special Agent Jessica Knight (Katrina Law<\/strong>) and her future with the NCIS team after a massive job offer outside Washington, D.C. Luckily, viewers will get their answers beginning in October.<\/p>\n

How Did Season 21 of \u2018NCIS\u2019 End?<\/h3>\n

During the May finale, Knight and Agent Aldean Parker (Gary Cole<\/strong>) got trapped on a ship that was scheduled to sink and become part of the natural ocean habitat. After getting injured on board, Parker started to see glimpses of a young girl named Lily, but viewers were left without any real context of their connection.<\/p>\n

Knight managed to swim for help \u2014 and her team showed up to assist \u2014 before Parker died from his injuries. Once Knight was back on her feet, Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll<\/strong>) pressed her for an answer for a job she was offered earlier in the episode. Knight said \u201cHell, yeah\u201d to the position as Chief React Training Officer at Camp Pendleton. The decision will most likely affect her rocky relationship with Dr. Jimmy Palmer<\/a> (Brian Dietzen<\/strong>), but before she could inform him of her choice the ending credits began to roll.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Next for Jessica Knight?<\/h3>\n

\u201cWell, you know, we\u2019ve set something up there,\u201d showrunner Binder teased during an interview with TVLine<\/em><\/a> published in June, hinting that it might not be the last we\u2019ve seen of Knight. \u201cAnd I will point you toward our track record where, \u2018You never know.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Binder played coy about Knight\u2019s future, instead pointing to past character arcs as what could transpire. \u201cWe\u2019ve had people look like they were going away and then it\u2019s found out they weren\u2019t going away, and then people who just disappear like Gibbs [Mark Harmon<\/strong>],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He noted that Knight\u2019s relationship being \u201cin flux\u201d was one of many factors that helped her decide to take the job. Binder remained cryptic about season 22\u2019s Knight story line, but said, \u201cWe think the audience will be satisfied with where they see this go. Sometimes that satisfaction is bittersweet and sometimes it\u2019s just pure joy. You\u2019ll have to wait to find out which one it\u2019s going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Will Mark Harmon Return?<\/h3>\n

Harmon will narrate NCIS: Origins<\/em>, a prequel to the NCIS<\/em> series, while working as an executive producer on both shows. When it comes to playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs again on the OG show, he played coy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been asked that a lot.\u201d Harmon told reporters in July<\/a> at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. \u201c[But] I\u2019ve always let the writers do what they want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe big conversation is how can we light some s\u2013t on fire this season? That\u2019s what I want to do,\u201d Valderrama told People<\/em><\/a> in July. \u201cI think it\u2019s not going to be your casual, like, \u2018Oh, your favorite team is in trouble.\u2019 It\u2019s going to be more personal, more soul-shattering. There\u2019ll be some [tragedy] this season.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor teased that a romance could be in the cards for Torres after previously dating coworker Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham<\/strong>), which fizzled out on season 18. \u201cThere will be perhaps some new flames,\u201d Valderrama added. \u201cPerhaps Torres might be ready for love this season. Who knows? That might be a conversation or may not be a conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

After being introduced to the vision of Lily during the NCIS<\/em> season 21 finale, viewers want to know who this person is \u2014 and why Parker dreamt of her during his hour of need. \u201cI will say this, it\u2019s not entirely clear to him who this girl [seen in flashback\/hallucination] was,\u201d Binder explained to TVLine<\/em><\/a> in August. \u201cThere\u2019s something in his past that even he\u2019s not aware of that\u2019s bubbling to the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n
