Joe Locke<\/strong><\/a> is clarifying what he meant in recent interview quotes.<\/p>\n The 20-year-old Heartstopper<\/strong><\/a><\/em> star spoke out about his upcoming new Marvel<\/strong><\/a> series Agatha All Along<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, his character \u201cTeen,\u201d and the Marvel fandom in a new feature with Variety<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe show never shies away from his queerness, but it\u2019s not a defining feature of his character,\u201d he shared of his character, who is simply only known as Teen at this time. \u201cIt\u2019s just one layer of him as a person.\u201d<\/p>\n He also thought that he would be gaining muscle for the role, but learned they actually wanted him stay as he is.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought you get cast in a Marvel show, you get paid to get really muscly and hench,\u201d Joe<\/strong> said. \u201c\u2018We want you to stay small and twink-y\u2019 is basically what they said, in a very corporate way.\u201d<\/p>\n He also added some comments about criticism and backlash from the Marvel fandom in the interview, to which he later took to social media to clarify.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt was like, \u2018Oh, why has Marvel done this campy gay stereotype?\u2019\u201d Joe<\/strong> tells Variety<\/em> of the backlash regarding his character after the trailers<\/a> were released. \u201cIt really annoyed me because I was like, \u2018You can\u2019t ask for authentic casting and then be upset if you have a camp character.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m fully aware that the Marvel fandom is far less nice than the Heartstopper<\/em> fandom. There\u2019s going to be a lot of people that just hate everything about the character and everything about what I\u2019ve done with it, and I just have to be OK with that,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n \u201cMarvel fans are very open with their opinions. But they\u2019re not in a Marvel show, so\u2014\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m doing the one thing that they really wish they could be doing.
