The tormented \u2018Friends\u2019 actor \u2013 who shot to fame playing Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom from 1994 to 2004 \u2013 was killed on 28 October, 2023, aged 54 from the \u201cacute effects\u201d of the anaesthetic after getting into the hot-tub of his $6million mansion in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles while high on three doses of the substance, with five people now indicted over his passing.<\/p>\n
An extract about the drug from Matthew\u2019s 2022 memoir \u2018Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing\u2019 \u2013 which dealt with his years of addiction \u2013 has resurfaced since their arrests.<\/p>\n
In a section of the book in which the actor wrote about using ketamine therapy to treat his depression, he said its numbing effect was like \u201cbeing hit in the head with a giant happy shovel\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201c(It) has my name written all over it \u2013 they might as well have called it \u2018Matty\u2019.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cKetamine felt like a giant exhale. They\u2019d bring me into a room, sit me down, put headphones on me so I would listen to music, blindfold me, and put an IV in.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMatthew said the drip contained Ativan and ketamine, and he would lie down for an hour while it flowed into his bloodstream.<\/p>\n
\nHe went on: \u201cI would disassociate, see things \u2013 I\u2019d been in therapy for so long that I wasn\u2019t even freaked out by this: \u2018Oh, there\u2019s a horse over there? Fine \u2013 might as well be\u2019.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAs the music played and the K ran through me, it all became about the ego, and the death of the ego.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI often thought that I was dying during that hour. \u2018Oh,\u2019 I thought, \u2018this is what happens when you die\u2019.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cYet I would continually sign up for this s*** because it was something different, and anything different is good.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nEven though he was a fan of the drug\u2019s effects \u2013 and despite him going on to take the drug after saying he was clean in promotional interviews for his book \u2013 Matthew insisted in his autobiography \u201cketamine was not for me\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201c(The) hangover was rough\u2026 (I) felt like a f****** pin cushion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
