This data included names, Social Security numbers, and other personal information. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As usual, when this sort of thing hits the news, our immediate reaction is to wonder what we can do to prevent ourselves from falling prey to identity theft, unauthorized withdrawals, false credit applications, and other nasty consequences. And, also, as usual, the information from the breached organization \u2014 and from most news organizations \u2014 is often vague and unsatisfactory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\">How do I know if my data was stolen from National Public Data?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Unfortunately, at the time this story was written, National Public Data was <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpublicdata.com\/Breach.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not providing a lot of information<\/a> about whose data was stolen. There are a couple of websites out there (specifically, <a href=\"http:\/\/npdbreach.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">npdbreach.com<\/a>, from Atlas Privacy, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/npd.pentester.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">npd.pentester.com<\/a>) that say they can tell you, but since they ask you to enter data such as your birth year, it\u2019s up to you whether you want to trust them or not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Many companies that have suffered a breach eventually offer the services of a security firm that will monitor your account for a period of time; but so far, the only thing NPD is doing is recommending that you monitor your accounts, get a free credit report, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/0497-credit-freeze-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initiate a credit freeze<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\">What\u2019s a credit freeze?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">A credit freeze prevents creditors from viewing your credit file. Whenever you apply for a credit card, loan, mortgage, or even just to rent an apartment, the bank or landlord evaluates your credit and the risk of approving you. It will last one year, and after that, you can renew it. The bad news is that you&#8217;ll have to reach out to each credit reporting company independently. If you can find out which credit reporting company your potential landlord or bank uses, you can lift it only for that company. This won\u2019t affect your credit score, and it won\u2019t prevent you from receiving a credit report. You should try to do this as soon as possible. Even if you&#8217;ve happened here by accident, you might consider putting this freeze on your accounts as a safety precaution because there\u2019s no telling whether your data is out there. Fraudsters will sometimes test to see if you actually read your statements by charging or withdrawing small amounts and, if you don\u2019t report it, will then follow up with larger thefts.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\">You are entitled to a <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/consumer-alerts\/2023\/10\/you-now-have-permanent-access-free-weekly-credit-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free credit report once a week<\/a>. These reports contain information on loans, bill payments, debts, and other financial dealings that have occurred, and so will let you know if anything has happened that you may not have authorized. There is actually a single place you can go to obtain a credit report from all three agencies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualcreditreport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AnnualCreditReport.com<\/a>, which will then move you to each agency you want a report from.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\">You can set up <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/what-know-about-credit-freezes-and-fraud-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a fraud alert<\/a>, which means a business must verify your identity before extending new credit. If you set up a fraud alert at one of the three credit bureaus, it will contact the other two so they can set one up as well. The fraud alert lasts a year, after which you can renew it.
