\u2018The Traitors US\u2019 host and actor, 59, who starred alongside male chimpanzee Tonka in the 1997 film \u2018Buddy\u2019, says he can \u201cempathise\u201d with the creatures \u2013 and now wants his new \u2018Chimp Crazy\u2019 HBO documentary to spotlight the chimp trade and the ill-treatment of the animals in captivity.<\/p>\n
He opened up to the New York Times about the project, which follows exotic animal broker Tonia Haddix as she is involved in a \u201cyears-long saga\u201d involving her, Tonka, PETA and Alan \u2013 with the four-part series also focusing on private primate ownership and the \u201cfolly\u201d of \u201cimposing human traits onto captive apes\u201d who have \u201cno agency over where or how they live\u201d.<\/p>\n
Alan said: \u201cI really empathise with the people in this documentary, especially as someone who has really, truly loved the chimp myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said he found Tonka \u201cvery gentle\u201d and added he agreed to appear in the HBO documentary as he was already working with PETA on a campaign to rescue the famous chimp.<\/p>\n
\nAlan teamed up with PETA in 2022 to help find out what happened to his primate friend \u2013 and even offered $10,000 for information leading to his discovery, before a team of PETA rescuers eventually discovered Tonka\u2019s location and relocated him to a sanctuary.<\/p>\n
\nAlan added he wanted to put the spotlight back on the chimp trade and \u201cthe abuses happening at private zoos\u201d by contributing to the documentary.<\/p>\n
\nHe also stressed he hasn\u2019t worked with wild animals since \u2018Buddy\u2019, adding: \u201cWe don\u2019t need to (use them in films) anymore. I have lived through that change, being someone who actually was in a film with wild animals to someone who is actively campaigning for that not to happen.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a big journey. I was na\u00efve and I was ignorant. I really do understand the deep love. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut that\u2019s hurting the animal \u2013 the animal\u2019s not getting to live the life they were supposed to live.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
