Give it a whirl this weekend. The phone looks awesome. Google seems to have gotten the foldable phone design pretty right this time, and using Gemini side by side with an app is actually a great case for a larger screen. There are lots of new Pixel devices this week, but I\u2019m most excited about the Fold.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/gemini\/made-by-google-gemini-ai-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gemini Live<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Big week for chatty voice assistants! OpenAI rolled out Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/8\/15\/24220378\/openai-advanced-voice-mode-uncanny-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which is both cool and creepy<\/a>. And Google showed off Gemini Live, which, well, same. I\u2019m curious to see if either of these can go from nifty novelty to actually useful feature.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/movie\/945961-alien-romulus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Alien: Romulus<\/strong><\/em><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>I honestly don\u2019t care if this movie\u2019s any good. (And the reviews so far are\u2026 pretty mixed.) I learned a ton from this long, deep, truly wild factory tour. Insta-subscribe.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/experiences\/7452106424824357\/?intern_source=blog&amp;intern_content=meta-quest-hdmi-link-launch#reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Meta Quest HDMI Link<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> If we\u2019ve learned anything from the Vision Pro this year, it\u2019s that VR headsets are just really, really big televisions. Meta\u2019s new app means you can plug almost anything in and use your headset as the big screen it\u2019s meant to be.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldenhillsoftware.com\/unread\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Unread for Mac<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>This one\u2019s like two weeks old, but I was on vacation, so I just saw it: my favorite RSS reader for iOS is now on the Mac, and it\u2019s great. Fast, simple, nice to look at, works with everything, instantly part of my day-to-day workflow.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/tv\/90812-industry?language=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Industry<\/em> season 3<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>It took a while for this HBO show to get its flowers, but it totally deserves the belated love. It has some of the same chaotic energy as <em>Succession, <\/em>lots of the money and bad behavior, and plenty of good-looking people doing hateable stuff. Takes a couple of episodes to really get going, but it\u2019s great once it does.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/neuecast.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Neuecast<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>I actually like the new <a href=\"https:\/\/overcast.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Overcast<\/strong><\/a> design, but evidently, not everyone\u2019s a fan. And if, for whatever reason, you\u2019re looking for a new podcast app, this is a gorgeous, simple one that\u2019s remarkably full-featured for being so new. Since we need several phones to check if Niagara Launcher works properly on the vast Android landscape, I have the luxury of being able to use two phones. The Pixel is my daily driver, and I use my Fold 3 with its wide screen to relax and wind down in the evenings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><strong>The wallpaper: <\/strong>The first one is based on a <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/green-leaf-plants-wMqPJs2x0-A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photograph<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniespratt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annie Spratt<\/a>, and the second is a blurred version of a wallpaper I did while tinkering with the fantastic 3D modeling software Blender. I prefer a simple setup, and everything you see \u2014 the icon packs, weather, calendar, and media widgets \u2014\u00a0comes with Niagara Launcher. The only exception is the <a href=\"https:\/\/fonts.google.com\/specimen\/Caprasimo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caprasimo<\/a> font on the Fold. I tried a few extravagant fonts for upcoming homescreen setup presets. It\u2019s fast, feels native, and syncs seamlessly with Google Calendar. The developers have put a lot of thought and care into it.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack <\/strong>\u2014 if you message me on any of these, expect to encounter a fair share of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourmeme.com\/memes\/hide-the-pain-harold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hide the Pain Harold<\/a>\u201d stickers or reactions.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Firefox<\/strong>: In the morning and on breaks, I use it to check the news on <em>The Verge<\/em> and Reddit, but I want to reduce my Reddit use.
