The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras<\/em> <\/a>marks Nurys Mateo<\/strong> and Horacio Guti\u00e9rrez Jr<\/strong>.\u2019s first Challenge<\/em><\/a> season as an official couple, and their new relationship status impacted their gameplay.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like it has its ups and its downs,\u201d Nurys, 29, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> at MTV\u2019s The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras<\/em> event in Los Angeles on Friday, August 9. \u201cIt\u2019s hard because I\u2019m now 100 percent not just playing for myself, but playing for him as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nurys noted that it\u2019s \u201ceasy to be selfish and make certain moves or do certain things when you\u2019re by yourself,\u201d but now she has to factor Horacio, 28, into her strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018I can\u2019t piss someone off that I know will purposely take it out on him now,\u2019\u201d she quipped. \u201cI [had] to learn to keep my mouth shut a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt\u2019s not uncommon for stars to quickly fall head over heels in love while filming a reality TV show \u2014 and The Challenge\u00a0competitors are no exception. While many fans didn\u2019t think Paulie Calafiore and Cara Maria Sorbello would create a real bond after meeting on Final Reckoning in 2018, but they proved the haters wrong. [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite the complications to her game, Nurys said she was \u201csuper grateful\u201d to have Horacio competing alongside her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the time, you don\u2019t get to have your person with you,\u201d she said. \u201cFor me, [being on] TV is a lot. Having my partner by my side is the best thing ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Horacio added that he benefited from having his outspoken girlfriend in his corner.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs everybody knows, I\u2019m more on the shy side. I\u2019m more of an introvert,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to say she speaks for me, but, you know, sometimes when I feel like [being quiet], [she] can take over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nurys and Horacio both made their Challenge<\/em> debuts on Ride or Dies<\/em>, which premiered in 2022. They returned for Battle for a New Champion<\/em> the following year and turned their showmance into a full-blown relationship after the season ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing from showing our love on [season] 39 into the real world, it\u2019s been the best transition ever,\u201d Horacio told Us<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m happy and just blessed to have her by my side.\u201d<\/p>\n

The duo have steep competition on Battle of the Eras<\/em> as they go head to head with Challenge<\/em> stars from various stages of the show\u2019s history. Nurys and Horacio agreed that they can\u2019t truthfully say that their group of newbies, Era No. 4, is the best era.<\/p>\n

Horacia praised Era No. 3, which includes Tori Deal<\/strong> and Cory Wharton<\/strong>, noting that they have experience with the OGs while still having \u201cmore of that youth side.\u201d Nurys, meanwhile, named Era. No. 2, which includes Cara Maria Sorbello<\/strong> and Laurel Stucky<\/strong>, as the best because of the strong women.<\/p>\n
