The 60-year-old \u2018St Elmo\u2019s Fire\u2019 actor hasn\u2019t had a drink in 34 years, and has now said his decision to give up booze wasn\u2019t the result of a sudden revelation \u2013 but instead a process of self-reflection marked by a string of wake-up calls that led up to the shocking moment he missed his mum\u2019s desperate calls about his grandad\u2019s health crisis.<\/p>\n
He told People: \u201cGetting sober was an incremental decision. It\u2019s baby steps until you\u2019re ready. You can’t do it until you\u2019re really ready.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before he entered rehab at the Sierra Tucson facility in 1990, Rob said he had a series of \u201cbaby steps\u201d on the road to getting clean.<\/p>\n
He said one of them came when he watched one his \u201cheroes\u201d Warren Beatty in the 1975 romantic comedy \u2018Shampoo\u2019.<\/p>\n
\nRob added: \u201cIt\u2019s a great movie, but at the end, he\u2019s a bon vivant, charming playboy left with nothing.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt affected me tremendously and (was) the first glimmer of your conscience, your destiny, God, going, \u2018Psst, pay attention to this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRob added his infamous sex tape of him with two young women was also a major moment in his life.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201c(That) definitely changed my life at the time, and, in hindsight, I realised it was another step that led me to recovery and reevaluating my life. \u201cBut the thing that really changed me was not being able to show up for my family and myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRob also said in 1990 when his grandfather had a heart attack he ignored his mother\u2019s call about the crisis.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cI remember like it was yesterday \u2013 my mom telling me (on my answering machine) to \u2018Pick up, pick up\u2019 because my grandpa had had a heart attack. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI couldn\u2019t deal with it in the state I was in, and I needed to go to sleep to wake up so I could deal with it. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cWho doesn\u2019t keep a bottle of Cuervo Gold (tequila) by their bedside table? <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThat was the final wake-up call. I\u2019ve been sober ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
