The team behind Netflix\u2019s American Murder: Laci Peterson<\/em> docuseries offered Scott Peterson<\/strong> a chance to participate \u2014 but he chose not to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did reach out to Scott and we had a couple of conversations with him in prison,\u201d director Skye Borgman<\/strong> exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em>. \u201cHe ultimately decided not to participate in our documentary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Borgman didn\u2019t have any issue with Scott, 51, not being involved, adding, \u201cIt is fine. Especially because I feel like we did get the perspective from his family and that we did want it to be very, very Laci forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

While working on the three-part doc<\/a>, Borgman always kept Laci\u2019s perspective in mind.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom Sherri Papini\u2018s kidnapping hoax to the two separate documentaries about Scott Peterson\u2018s murder conviction, it\u2019s safe to say that most streaming services are investing in true crime in 2024. Netflix and Hulu usually corner the genre by focusing on the most recent \u2014 and most surprising \u2014 cases. It was Investigation Discovery, however, that [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was always the intention from the beginning to get as many different sides to this story as possible. We cast a wide net when we were looking for people to talk to,\u201d Borgman continued. \u201cThere were even people who don\u2019t appear in the documentary who we talked to and who provided some pretty important insight into the story. It was important to me to talk to Scott\u2019s sisters and to get their perspective. And it was important to talk to law enforcement and Laci\u2019s family.\u201d<\/p>\n

American Murder: Laci Peterson<\/em>, which premiered on Wednesday, August 14, offers Laci\u2019s family and friends the opportunity to share their side of the story. Laci originally went missing in 2002 while she was eight months pregnant. Her husband, Scott, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder<\/a> in 2003 after Laci was found dead at age 27.<\/p>\n

Scott was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Laci and the second-degree murder of their infant son. He maintained his innocence while being sentenced to death, which was overturned in 2020. One year later, Scott was re-sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n

Netflix\u2019s coverage of the high-profile case comes days before Peacock is set to release their upcoming true crime special Face to Face With Scott Peterson<\/em>. Their version will feature Scott speaking out for the first time in 20 years<\/a> with footage of him from prison.<\/p>\n

Despite the dual releases, Borgman supports multiple perspectives on the situation.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSummer is officially upon Us and TV fans are in for some exciting content with shows such as The Bear and Only Murders in the Building. The Bear, which debuted on Hulu in June 2022, introduced viewers to The Beef restaurant, which was taken over by Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) following the death of his [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI always like hearing from all different sides. Honestly, I think it\u2019s part of our responsibility as documentary makers to get all sides of the story,\u201d she shared with Us<\/em>. \u201cIt makes for a much more layered, complicated and truthful documentary to be able to hear from Scott\u2019s side and to be able to hear from Laci\u2019s side. So that\u2019s important to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The filmmaker continued: \u201cIt\u2019s also important to me to be as balanced as possible, to listen to people, to take their stories in and to put their perspectives together. To put the evidence together, put everything together and deliver a story in as truthful a way as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Borgman knew there was another documentary being made<\/a> while she worked on American Murder: Laci Peterson<\/em> \u2014 but she didn\u2019t let it influence her work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know what their perspective was. I still don\u2019t know. I\u2019ve watched the trailer as well. It seems like you said that it skews more towards Scott\u2019s innocence. But the fact that that project was going on didn\u2019t really impact the making or the decisions of our project at all,\u201d she noted. \u201cWe were committed to our story. And when you get involved in a story like this, it\u2019s almost like it\u2019s all you can think about. You\u2019re not thinking about all this stuff that\u2019s happening outside of it. We were very focused on this. We knew it was happening, but we had no idea what it\u2019s about or what kind of access they had.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of the doc\u2019s release, Borgman reflected on how her initial vision for the project compared to the final<\/a> version.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith every documentary series, I go into them with a very clear outline of the story points that I know and how I see the three different episodes going together. Then you go into the field and you talk to people and you\u2019re sitting down with them for two to eight hours sometimes. You learn little details that they\u2019ve forgotten about or that they mentioned. Then you dig a little deeper,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo you learn a lot in the production [phase] and then it changes it a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n
