Working through their struggles. Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> <\/a>fans have watched Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman\u2019s marriage pushed to the brink throughout season 19, but star Kevin McKidd<\/strong> <\/a>says there\u2019s finally a light at the end of the tunnel.<\/p>\n \u201cHe and Teddy [Kim Raver<\/strong><\/a>] are still working. You can see them starting to work their way back toward being one, and they\u2019ve had a rough time, I think,\u201d the Scotland native, 49, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> at PaleyFest<\/a> in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 2.<\/p>\n Owen lost his medical license earlier in season 19 after illegally providing veterans with drugs for physician-assisted deaths. Since then, he\u2019s been on probation, practicing only under the supervision of other physicians. The situation has been stressful for both doctors, especially as Teddy took on a new role as chief of surgery. However, Owen has since earned his license back, and Bailey (Chandra Wilson<\/strong><\/a>) advised Teddy and Owen to figure out their relationship now instead of drowning in resentment.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we\u2019re gonna see them really sort of bend down into this really supportive, loving couple<\/a>,\u201d McKidd told Us<\/em> of the couple. \u201cShe\u2019s the chief, he\u2019s the head of trauma. He\u2019s now able to support her because \u2026 he knows what it takes to do that job. So he becomes her rock in a sense as the season moves on.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s a welcome change for both the viewers and stars. \u201cThat\u2019s really fun to play because it\u2019s been so kind of tumultuous for them and it\u2019s nice to see Owen really show up for his wife, who\u2019s in one of the most difficult jobs in the hospital,\u201d the director added.<\/p>\n McKidd added that Owen won\u2019t take his return to the OR for granted. \u201cHe had his wings kind of clipped and now he\u2019s able to spread his wings again. He\u2019s very happy,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhat\u2019s good is that when something gets taken away from you in life, you realize how much you love it. And I think it\u2019s reigniting him in a way. He\u2019s reinvigorated as a character because he \u2026 almost lost everything. So now he\u2019s even more invested in students in medicine, and it\u2019s great to play this kind of reinvigorated version of him.\u201d<\/p>\n While his character is rediscovering his love of medicine, McKidd is spreading his own wings behind the camera. The star has directed 37 episodes of Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> since 2011, and his latest episode, which aired on Thursday, March 30, opened with an extended one-shot take that took viewers from the ambulance into the ER with a car crash victim.<\/p>\n \u201cWe did it in two takes,\u201d McKidd revealed. \u201cThe first take was perfect. [Executive producer] Debbie Allen<\/strong><\/a> was like, \u2018We\u2019re done. Great. We\u2019ve got it, we\u2019ve got it, it\u2019s done.\u2019 And I said, \u2018No, let\u2019s do one more.\u2019 And the second take was just 15 percent better. So the take that aired was take two of the two takes. I\u2019m incredibly proud. I think it\u2019s some of the best work we\u2019ve done. We\u2019ve never done that in the show. We literally have done something that the show has never done in its 19 seasons.
