Jordan Chiles<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 mom, Gina Chiles<\/strong>, came to her daughter\u2019s defense after the gymnast received backlash for her floor exercise bronze medal<\/a> win after her coach appealed her original score<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe racist disgusting comments are still happening in 2024,\u201d Gina wrote via X<\/a> on Friday, August 9. \u201cI\u2019m tired of people who say it no longer exists. My daughter is a highly decorated Olympian with the biggest heart and a level of sportsmanship that is unmatched \u2026 and she\u2019s being called disgusting things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jordan, 23, initially placed fifth in the Monday, August 5, floor exercise final before Team USA filed an inquiry about one of her skills, claiming she performed a tour jet\u00e9 full. Judges ultimately accepted the inquiry, moving Jordan up from fifth place to third and securing her a bronze medal. (Jordan initially scored 13.666 for her routine and was bumped to 13.766 after the inquiry was accepted.)<\/p>\n

Team USA gymnast Simone Biles<\/strong> earned a silver medal in the event and Brazil\u2019s Rebeca Andrade<\/strong> took home the gold.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs Team USA takes on the 2024 Paris Olympics, the American athletes have already made an impression at the summer Games. The 2024 Olympics kicked off on Friday, July 26, with an illustrious opening ceremony that took place entirely outdoors on the River Seine and featured performances from the likes of Celine Dion and Lady [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Romanian gymnast Ana B\u00e5rbosu<\/strong> sat in third before Jordan\u2019s inquiry was evaluated. She began to celebrate on the floor with her country\u2019s flag before realizing she did not win the bronze. During the broadcast, Barbosu, 18, was seen walking away from the event in tears.<\/p>\n

Gina isn\u2019t the only person to come to Jordan\u2019s defense, as her coach, C\u00e9cile Canqueteau-Landi<\/strong>, also shut down rumblings that Jordan \u201cstole\u201d the medal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI shouldn\u2019t have to explain but I will ONCE,\u201d Canqueteau-Landi wrote on Tuesday, August 6, via Instagram. \u201cJordan\u2019s highest possible SV on floor is a 5.9- At quals and team finals she received a 5.8 and we didn\u2019t question it because we saw that not all elements were completed. During floor finals, we thought [it] was better and being placed 5th with nothing to lose, I sent the inquiry so I wouldn\u2019t regret not asking. I didn\u2019t think it would be accepted and at my surprise it was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canqueteau-Landi explained she \u201csimply did my job and fought for my athlete,\u201d despite feeling empathy for B\u00e5rbosu.<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cDo I feel bad for the Romanian athlete? Of course I do! It was so sad and heartbreaking to see, but it is the sport! You don\u2019t have to like it but you do have to respect the outcome and more importantly respect Jordan and not drag her down because you disagree. She EARNED that bronze medal, her 1st individual Olympic medal and I couldn\u2019t be more proud and excited!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSeveral stars have chosen to come out to support the stellar athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Kelly Clarkson covered the opening ceremony for NBC along with Mike Tirico and Peyton Manning on July 26, which included performances from stars such as Lady Gaga and C\u00e9line Dion. During Dion\u2019s powerful performance, which marked her [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After securing her place on the podium, Jordan recalled the \u201ctrue emotions\u201d of the moment that left \u201ceverybody\u201d in tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, there were so many emotions going through my body in that moment,\u201d Jordan said in a Today<\/em> appearance on Thursday, August 8. \u201cThere [were] a lot of things happening, [from] me not being on the podium to me being on the podium. I think the biggest thing is just always understanding not to doubt yourself, and just to let everything ride out how it\u2019s supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Team Romania also submitted an inquiry about gymnast Sabrina Maneca-Voinea<\/strong>\u2019s performance, who ultimately placed fifth, but her score remained unchanged. (Maneca-Voinea, 17, and B\u00e5rbosu both finished with matching scores of 13.700 but because B\u00e5rbosu had a higher execution score, she placed higher at the end of the competition.)<\/p>\n
