GARM was an initiative formed in 2019 by the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA); the idea was to stop advertising on social media platforms that don\u2019t meet certain safety standards. In its lawsuit, X said that GARM \u201corganized an advertiser boycott of Twitter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The lawsuit from the platform formerly known as Twitter was one of several odd legal actions coming from Elon Musk \u2014 ones that seem more focused on punishing anyone who doesn\u2019t agree with him than based on any coherent legal theory. Musk has also sued OpenAI<\/a>, a competitor to his X.AI, and Media Matters<\/a>, to try to silence the non-profit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n He added, \u201cIf somebody is going to try to blackmail me with advertising, blackmail me with money, go fuck yourself. Go fuck yourself. Is that clear? I hope it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n When Musk bought Twitter, most of its revenue came from advertising \u2014\u00a0and that money dried up with his takeover. Perhaps the advertisers felt skittish about Musk\u2019s \u201canything goes\u201d approach to moderation \u2014 or perhaps it was Musk\u2019s own posts<\/a>, including one about \u201cwhite pride.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
