According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/2580383?hl=en-GB#:~:text=to%20these%20users.-,%27Unknown%27%20category,-Google%20Ads%20can%27t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Ads help page<\/a>, the \u201cunknown\u201d demographic category refers to people whose age, gender, parental status, or household income are supposedly unidentified, and can allow advertisers to reach \u201ca significantly wider audience\u201d when selected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">However, Google could use app downloads and online activity to determine \u201cwith a high degree of confidence\u201d that the \u201cunknown\u201d group was populated by younger users, reports the <em>FT<\/em>. Google staffers are said to have used this loophole to get around the company\u2019s own policies, having <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/families\/giving-kids-and-teens-safer-experience-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced rules that block ad targeting<\/a> based on \u201cage, gender, or interests of people under 18\u201d back in 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Spark Foundry, a US-based subsidiary of the ad giant Publicis, reportedly worked with the companies to launch the illicit marketing campaign in Canada between February and April this year, before going on to trial the program in the US in May. Meta and Google intended to expand the campaign to international markets and promote additional services like Facebook, according to the <em>FT<\/em>.
