The highly-anticipated project is aptly titled\u00a0<\/span><em><span>THE FORCE<\/span><\/em><span>, and ET&#8217;s Rachel Smith got to speak with the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zQzNTYaaGcc\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2021 Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame inductee<\/a><span>\u00a0about his inspiration at his\u00a0album listening experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I&#8217;m just excited for [fans] to get to experience what me and Q-Tip have been working on all this time,&#8221; LL COOL J, 56, tells ET about the upcoming album. &#8220;I know it&#8217;s been a long time since I put out an album that moved the culture and gave people my perspective on where I think the state of the art should be. And so, rather than get out here and talk about what should be, I decided to create some music and show people what I think hip-hop can sound like in 2024, you know what I&#8217;m saying?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The rapper explains that\u00a0<\/span><em><span>THE FORCE<\/span><\/em><span>, which drops on Sept. 6, stands for\u00a0&#8220;Frequencies of Real Creative Energy.&#8221; Considering how <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/ll-cool-j-reflects-on-his-musical-career-hip-hop-needs-to-be-served-on-a-silver-platter-exclusive\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LL COOL J has previously teased that the album features<\/a><span>\u00a0&#8220;a lot of collabs on there,&#8221; fans can expect a lot of diverse creative energy in the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>LL Cool J performs tracks from his album &#8216;The Force&#8217; during a listening session at The Continental Club on June 28, 2024<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\">Julia Beverly\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>The album covers a variety of topics, from racial division to LL COOL J&#8217;s feelings of isolation during the COVID pandemic lockdown. Reflecting on his decision to take his time with the album production and its many themes, LL COOL J tells ET that he&#8217;s learned that &#8220;as times change, you got to learn how to just mix it up a little bit.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;It&#8217;s kind of a matter of just being open to what&#8217;s going on in the world&#8230; It&#8217;s a lot of fun on [the album], lot of energy, good vibes,&#8221; he shares. &#8220;[There are] all kinds of themes on there so it&#8217;s not only a dark, heavy thing but there are some things on there that kind of touch the world from different perspectives.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>LL COOL J adds that he feels that his job as an artist is to &#8220;get out of the way and let the song speak.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;This is where I was led and I feel like people are gonna really enjoy it,&#8221; he continues.\u00a0&#8220;There&#8217;s got to be more to the music and more to hip hop than just the surface and so what I did was, I had fun with the surface &#8212; of course &#8212;\u00a0but then there are moments in the album where it goes a little deeper and we get a little more profound and we have some deeper thoughts and deeper meanings. So it&#8217;s a combination of your normal, fun, mundane silliness combined with some things that I think are more important but said in an artistic way. I just wanted to make something cool, that&#8217;s all.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The rapper told ET something similar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/ll-cool-j-reflects-on-his-musical-career-hip-hop-needs-to-be-served-on-a-silver-platter-exclusive\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">while looking back on his decades-long career<\/a><span> in February 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then, LL COOL J told ET that when he got older he began to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/ll-cool-j-explains-some-of-his-wildest-music-video-moments-in-hilarious-tiktok-180725\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">think about his work in a different way<\/a><span>\u00a0and changed his scope.\u00a0&#8220;As you mature and evolve, you start realizing, it was all about me and I [was]\u00a0thinking about me. Now, I can look this way and say, &#8216;Make it about somebody else,'&#8221; he said reflectively.\u00a0&#8220;Now I can help other people. So the guys that\u00a0I might have been competitive with back in the days,\u00a0now I&#8217;m looking at [them] like, &#8216;How can I help you?'&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That mindset led the rapper to create\u00a0his own businesses in the music industry, including\u00a0the company\u00a0<\/span><i><span>Rock the Bells.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>Initially a record label to produce music,\u00a0<\/span><em><span>Rock the Bells<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is now a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.rockthebells.com\/pages\/about\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global lifestyle brand media company<\/a><span>\u00a0that\u00a0&#8220;focuses on content, commerce and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rockthebells.com\/festival\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">experiences<\/a><span>\u00a0that honor the culture and the core elements of hip-hop.&#8221; Even with all his other work, the rapper is dedicated to spreading the word of hip-hop and ensuring\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/ll-cool-j-schools-dj-for-calling-hip-hop-pioneers-dusty-they-created-an-industry-that-you-eat-off\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the genre receives the respect it deserves<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<footer><span>That same year, LL COOL J joined\u00a0a star-studded showcase during the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/awards\/grammys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023\u00a0GRAMMY Awards<\/a><span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/grammys-celebrates-50-years-of-hip-hop-jay-z-parties-in-the-audience-198517\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop<\/a><span>. The rapper\u00a0introduced the magnificent tribute before\u00a0The Roots&#8217; Black Thought offered powerful words. Then, the performances commenced, and it was incredibly epic.\u00a0From\u00a0Run-D.M.C.,\u00a0Rakim and\u00a0Public Enemy&#8217;s\u00a0Chuck D and Flavor Flav to Ice T, Queen Latifah, Wu-Tang Clan&#8217;s Method Man and Too $hort, they all took part in a hip-hop medley showcasing their best hits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Performers also included\u00a0Big Boi, Spliff Star, De La Soul, DJ Drama, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Missy Elliott, Future, GloRilla, Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Mele Mel &amp; Scorpio\/Ethiopian King, Ice-T, Lil Baby, Lil Wayne, The Lox, Rahiem, Salt-N-Pepa and Spinderella and Scarface.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>Busta Rhymes, Flavor Flav, and LL Cool J perform at 2023 GRAMMYs<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\"> Kevin Winter\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Reminiscing on the special night, the rapper says it &#8220;felt amazing&#8221; to be part of the star-studded tribute. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been saying for the last few years, since we started Rock the Bells, that hip-hop has been served in a greasy brown paper bag for too long and it needs to be served on a silver platter,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And at the GRAMMYs tribute, we served it on a silver platter. It felt amazing to be able to have Quest[love] curate this thing and for us to see Grandmaster Flash and Melly Mel on the same stage with Glorilla and Lil Baby. With PE in there, Run-D.M.C. and Nelly and Big Boi &#8212; it just felt amazing to see the breadth of it and be presented at a high level. It was amazing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>LL COOL J&#8217;s inclusion in the showcase was a no-brainer considering\u00a0his legacy as one of the earliest rappers to achieve commercial success. It&#8217;s this legacy that the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qc6ck8JBKt0\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2017 Kennedy Center Honors recipient<\/a><span>\u00a0has considered adapting into a biopic for his fans. But the rapper admits to ET that the idea &#8220;bores me a little bit.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Although LL COOL J concedes that he&#8217;s lived anything but a boring life, he reasons that &#8220;I&#8217;ve lived it [already.]&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I have mixed emotions about it, I don&#8217;t know. I just have a lot to do creatively and I feel like I can do a lot,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;It&#8217;s not that I&#8217;m against it, I&#8217;m opening to doing a documentary, I&#8217;m open to the idea of doing a biopic, but it just doesn&#8217;t excite me.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>LL COOL J performs at American Express Presents Carbone Beach on May 3, 2024<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\">Alexander Tamargo \/ Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>So fans might have to wait a while before LL COOL J makes the jump into biopic subject. But they won&#8217;t have to wait to see the rapper taking to the road to celebrate his latest album.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When asked whether he plans on following\u00a0<\/span><em><span>THE FORCE<\/span><\/em><span>&#8216;s release with a tour, LL COOL J tells ET that he&#8217;d &#8220;love to go on the road&#8221; and fully intends to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I&#8217;m definitely gonna go on the road, do some live music. I want people to hear it live, I want them to feel it live,&#8221; he adds enthusiastically. &#8220;I did an arena tour last year as kind of seeding the ground, just getting back out there [and] feeling the vibe, [and] now it&#8217;ll be nice to put an official tour on the road.
