The \u2018Ghostbusters\u2019 star, 72, admitted he nearly took a regular job after studying criminology, as his first dream was simply getting a pay cheque to get enough money to drive a car.<\/p>\n
Canadian Dan told People: \u201cMy first passion was really just surviving in Ottawa in the government town as an upper middle class son of bureaucrats.<\/p>\n
\u201cI started work on the Canadian National Railway unloading boxcars at 14 and I have not stopped working since.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added he was desperate to \u201cget a pay cheque, borrow a friend\u2019s car and put gas in it, take a lady on a date\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nBut his creative side was fuelled when his parents put him in improvisation classes when he was aged 12, with Dan adding: \u201cEvery weekend there was a class right down the street from where I lived, in the basement of the Ottawa Theatre. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cAt 12 years old, I was studying what I eventually went on to doing professionally \u2013 though then I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d ever take it up as a profession.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDan went to college at Canada\u2019s Carleton University, where he studied criminology and took a job driving a mail truck.<\/p>\n
\nBut it wasn\u2019t until his friend Valri Bromfield told him to give up the 9 to 5 grind that he went into acting.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cShe said, \u2018You\u2019re not going to be a prison guard. We\u2019re going to write comedy and you’re going into comedy\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe pair had a cable TV show, which they showed future \u2018Saturday Night Live\u2019 creator Lorne Michaels, now 79, who gave them TV work and kept Dan in mind as a potential top talent.<\/p>\n
\nDan said: \u201cThen I went on to a career at Second City with Valri, and it was really her urging and nudging that got me out of Ottawa.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI would\u2019ve worked as a clerk in the penitentiary service for 20 years if I\u2019d had my druthers (preference.) I\u2019d just be retiring.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt was Valeri. I\u2019ve got to thank her for taking me out of Ottawa. I\u2019ve had a beautiful run.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
