Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman<\/strong> has given a health update on his son Maximus<\/strong> after the 3-year-old was rushed to the emergency room last week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Freeman, 34, and his wife, Chelsea<\/strong>, made a joint Instagram post<\/a> on Thursday, August 1, revealing their son is \u201cbattling a severe case of Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome,\u201d which they called \u201ca rare neurological condition that is especially rare in children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Mayo Clinic, Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome is \u201c<\/span>a condition in which the body\u2019s immune system attacks the nerves. It can cause weakness, numbness or paralysis.\u201d Though an exact cause for the condition is not known, Cedars-Sinai says most children \u201c<\/span>recover fully with no complications,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese have been the hardest and scariest days of our lives,\u201d the post continued. \u201cMaximus is such a special boy and he has been fighting SO hard. This is going to be a journey to recover, but we have faith that he will be completely healed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Freeman was given a leave of absence from the Dodgers last week, traveling from the team\u2019s road trip in Houston back to Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been blown away by his improvements in the last 48 hours,\u201d the Freemans wrote. \u201cMaximus was excavated from his breathing tube and taken off of the ventilator yesterday, which is a huge win for us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The couple \u201cbelieve in the power of prayer\u201d and said \u201cwe have been witnessing a miracle in his recovery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Freemans \u2014 who also share sons Charlie, 7, and Brandon, 3, who was born three months before Maximus via surrogacy \u2014 first updated their followers<\/a> about Maximus\u2019 condition on Wednesday, July 26, revealing he had been diagnosed with transient synovitis, a condition that causes hip inflammation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chelsea wrote via Instagram Stories that Maximus was not \u201cable to sit, stand or walk.\u201d They stayed in the hospital overnight before Chelsea shared another update on Thursday, July 27, shortly after Maximus was discharged.<\/span><\/p>\n
