I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Live-Action Moana Announcement\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cHXB-5woeHw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cI want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavor, because there is no better world for us to honor the story of our people, our passion and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson starred in the 2016 animated flick as Maui alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/aulii-cravalho\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Auli\u2019i Cravalho<\/strong><\/a>, who voiced the titular character. The Disney film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/disney-introduces-first-polynesian-princess-meet-moana-2015208\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took inspiration from Polynesian myths<\/a> as the movie told the story of a girl, who happens to be the daughter of the chief, who must save her people from an environmental disaster caused by the gods. I\u2019m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/disney-releases-first-polynesian-princess-movie-moana-trailer-w209939\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">film premiered<\/a> nearly seven years ago, it earned $644 million at the global box office. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/oscars-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academy Awards<\/a>. The soundtrack was penned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/lin-manuel-miranda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/strong><\/a>, who earned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/grammys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grammy Award<\/a> and Oscar nomination for his contribution.<\/p>\n<p>Disney has released a series of live-action remakes of their iconic animated movies over the years including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/pictures\/stars-who-played-cinderella-on-the-big-screen-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cinderella<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/pictures\/stars-you-forgot-voiced-characters-in-beauty-and-the-beast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Beauty and the Beast<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/alfonso-ribeiro-says-will-smith-was-great-in-aladdin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Aladdin<\/em><\/a> and more. Most recently, the studio announced plans for a live-action version of <em>Lilo &amp; Stitch<\/em> starring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/zach-galifianakis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Zach Galifianakis<\/strong><\/a> and newcomer <strong>Maia Kealoha<\/strong>.
