Though the airline <a href=\"https:\/\/swamedia.com\/releases\/release-66ab759a702a76e0bcb37c45466723e3-southwest-adds-more-flights-for-popular-events-publishes-initial-redeye-service-and-new-routes-spanning-the-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> these flights as &#8220;new routes,&#8221; none are technically new since they&#8217;ve all been operated in recent years, according to TPG&#8217;s analysis of Cirium schedules.<\/p>\n<p>Southwest&#8217;s added routes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Miami to Columbus, Ohio (last operated in January 2022)<\/li>\n<li>Miami to Pittsburgh (last operated in April 2022)<\/li>\n<li>Chicago \u2014 specifically, Midway International Airport (MDW) \u2014 to Palm Springs, California (last operated in January 2022)<\/li>\n<li>West Palm Beach, Florida, to Providence (last operated in April 2023)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The four new routes will commence Jan. 7, 2025, and they are clearly aimed at transporting travelers from cold-weather cities to warmer pastures during the peak of winter. The new flights are already available to book.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want more aviation news? <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/aviation-newsletter\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for TPG&#8217;s free biweekly Aviation newsletter<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic and immediately after its peak, this tried-and-true strategy of <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/southwest-boosts-florida-utah-rotues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking winter-weary, leisure-focused travelers<\/a> to California and Florida proved very popular among U.S. airlines.<\/p>\n<p>That said, in recent months, there&#8217;s been some softness in revenue and bookings to many of these popular leisure destinations <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/airlines-capacity-leisure-orlando-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">due to overcapacity<\/a>. Many of them have historically been operated once weekly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Atlanta to San Diego<\/li>\n<li>Chicago to Rochester, New York<\/li>\n<li>Dallas to Philadelphia<\/li>\n<li>Fort Lauderdale to Montego Bay, Jamaica<\/li>\n<li>Long Beach, California, to Colorado Springs, Colorado<\/li>\n<li>Miami to New Orleans<\/li>\n<li>Nashville to Oakland, California<\/li>\n<li>Nashville to San Jose, California<\/li>\n<li>Oakland to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico<\/li>\n<li>Orlando to Chicago<\/li>\n<li>Orlando to El Paso, Texas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Southwest told TPG that these are &#8220;seasonal suspensions,&#8221; meaning that the airline plans to fly them again in the future. However, the airline hasn&#8217;t published any resumption dates, so we&#8217;ll have to monitor if the carrier follows through on its word.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re always monitoring travel trends and adjusting schedules to support our Customers, Employees, and operations,&#8221; Southwest said in a statement about the suspensions.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few months, Southwest has made a slew of changes to its network focused on boosting profitability. It dropped <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/southwest-airlines-city-cuts-chicago-atlanta-houston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four cities altogether<\/a>: Bellingham, Washington; Cozumel, Mexico; Syracuse, New York; and Houston \u2014 specifically, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). It also exited <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/southwest-new-routes-cuts-las-vegas-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">six other routes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Southwest even cut a popular Hawaii route: <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/southwest-airlines-cuts-lax-maui\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles to Maui<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The upside is that these cuts have allowed Southwest to find pockets of demand in other markets. The airline added <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/southwest-domestic-route-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11 new routes in April and May<\/a>, and it even unveiled a lengthy roster of <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/southwest-airlines-new-nfl-flights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-off flights for the upcoming NFL season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All of these network adjustments come as the airline is making monumental changes to the passenger experience.
