The \u2018Clerks\u2019 filmmaker, 53, was left reeling by a \u201cmassive\u201d cardiac arrest in 2018 and has now said he has worked hard on changing his mindset so he can enjoy living in the moment.<\/p>\n
He told People about how his mental health is \u201cgood\u201d despite the health shock: \u201cI\u2019m holding on. It\u2019s coming up on a year and a half since I got out (of hospital.) <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd when you\u2019re in there, it\u2019s very easy to stay healthy because you\u2019re surrounded by people who are doing the same. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd then the moment you leave, you\u2019re back in the real world and the rat race begins anew.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe added about changing his approach to life: \u201cIt is struggle \u2013 not a difficult f****** life-or-death struggle, but it\u2019s a struggle \u2013 to remember to breathe and place yourself in the here and now. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBe mindful, not live in the past, not worry about the future, but just be right here\u2026 a few years ago, there\u2019s a chance that I didn\u2019t walk away from a heart attack\u2026 I\u2019ve gotten six (years) since then. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI work under the assumption I’m living on borrowed time, so I just try to enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn 2022, Kevin told People his heart attack was \u201cthe greatest gift I ever had\u201d as it made him overhaul his life and increased his work output.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cNot only did it save my life, make me go vegan and go healthier and stuff, but it gave me the spine for \u2018Clerks III\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe film echoes his life as it sees its most outspoken character Randal Graves, played by Jeff Anderson, 54, hit by a heart attack in the film.<\/p>\n
\nKevin said about a scene where Randal is lying on an operating table pondering his existence: \u201cThat was based on real life. I was making peace with the fact that this could be it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nKevin had been told by a doctor he had an 80 per cent chance of dying when he had his cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
