Kevin Smith<\/strong><\/a> is considering following up his cult film Mallrats<\/em> as a tribute to the late Shannen Doherty<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In an interview with People<\/em><\/a>, Smith, 53, said Doherty, who died<\/a> on July 13 after losing a long battle to cancer, told him she \u201creally wanted to do\u201d a second Mallrats <\/em>during a conversation between the pair in recent months.<\/p>\n

The sequel to 1995\u2019s Mallrats<\/em>, which saw Doherty play the character of Rene Mosier alongside Jason Lee<\/strong>, Jeremy London<\/strong> and Ben Affleck<\/strong>, has already been written by Smith and was floated several years ago<\/a> before stalling in 2023 due to studio issues.<\/p>\n

Smith told the outlet that picking up the project, titled Twilight of the Mallrats<\/em>, may be on the cards. \u201cAt the very least, as a \u2018for Shannen,\u2019 that\u2019d be a cool thing to do,\u201d the Chasing Amy<\/em> director said.<\/p>\n

Through the years, the former Beverly Hills, 90210, star candidly shared her cancer battle with the public, which began when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Doherty went into remission in 2017, but [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Clerks<\/em> director shared further details into his final conversation with the Charmed<\/em> actress, revealing that Mallrats<\/em>\u2019 success is a testament to Doherty\u2019s performance in the film. \u201cIt was weird when it came out, it didn\u2019t do well,\u201d Smith said. \u201cBut when we first came to the Comic-Con 29 years ago, man, we were embraced and we were largely embraced because of her, because she had the credibility in the crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith added that they also talked about Doherty attending Vulgarathon<\/em>, a film event in New Jersey that begins on Saturday, August 3, where Mallrats<\/em> will be screened.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last conversations we were having was about her coming out to Jersey for the Vulgarathon<\/em> because she had done a bunch of cons and whatnot, and she met the Mallrats<\/em> contingency and stuff,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I was like, \u2018Oh my God, Shannen, you come and watch the movie in our theater and stuff, that\u2019ll just put you on the throne.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Smith appeared on an episode of Doherty\u2019s podcast, \u201cLet\u2019s Be Clear<\/a>\u201d, in January.<\/p>\n
