The superstar\u2014who’s ostensibly mid-shoot for Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning<\/a> 2<\/em>\u2014has somehow found time in the last month to also attend a Taylor Swift<\/strong> show<\/a>, the Glastonbury Festival<\/a>, and Wimbledon<\/a>. (His daughter’s graduation, not so much<\/a>.) And on Friday, his schedule included the opening ceremony<\/a> for the Paris Olympics<\/a>. But first, there was a secret induction into a centuries-old French order to attend.<\/p>\n The news broke in an early-morning tweet<\/a> from Rachida Dati<\/strong>, France’s Minister of Culture and former spokesperson for past French president Nicolas Sarkozy<\/strong><\/a>, who was since convicted of fraud<\/a> following a 2012 bid for an additional term. \u201cCongratulations to @TomCruise who is named a Knight of Arts and Letters by the Republic!,\u201d the French-language tweet reads.<\/p>\n \u201cHis filming of \u2018Mission Impossible\u2019 in Paris in 2017 beautifully showcased our capital. His passionate defense of cinemas inspires all lovers of the big screen.\u201d<\/p>\n (Dati is presumably referring to Mission Impossible: Fallout<\/em><\/a> in her post, in which writer-director Christopher McQuarrie<\/strong> ran Cruise and other members of the MI<\/em> team through their paces along the city’s twisty streets<\/a>.)<\/p>\n According to Deadline<\/em><\/a>, the award was conferred during a \u201csomewhat secret ceremony\u201d Friday, during which Cruise was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor. The award, which was established Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is widely known as France’s highest civilian award. Previous American honorees have included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos<\/strong>, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson<\/strong>, and disability awareness activist Helen Keller<\/strong>.<\/p>\n But while Tom Cruise’s induction into the Legion was kept out of the public eye, a few hours later he was back in it. Via Instagram story<\/a>, James Wilkie Broderick<\/strong>, the son of actors Sarah Jessica Parker<\/strong> and Matthew Broderick<\/strong>, posted photos of his parents at the opening ceremonies for the Olympics. Next to them at their perch over the Seine was Cruise, gesturing with arms wide<\/a>, as if to say \u201cI once fished in this river, and caught a fish this big<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
