While it appears to have put those plans on hold for now, the Elon Musk-led social network has revised the label attached to the check mark to make it virtually impossible to differentiate between those who earned it and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/11\/twitter-blue-to-relaunch-with-actual-verification-process-higher-price-for-apple-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all who paid for it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When users tap or click on the blue checkmark, the label now reads, \u201cThis account is verified because it\u2019s subscribed to Twitter Blue or is a legacy verified account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Twitter introduced verification through the Blue subscription plan, the label on the legacy verified accounts read, \u201cThis is a legacy verified account. It may or may not be notable.\u201d On the other hand, the label on the Blue account showed, \u201cThis account is verified because it\u2019s subscribed to Twitter Blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, it was possible to differentiate between two sets of verified accounts. But the new sign makes it hard to separate the two different verifications and identify notable accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, the New York Times also lost its verified check after it refused to pay for the verification service. In a reply to users posting a meme about the publication not paying for verification, Twitter CEO Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1642383150230773760?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cOh okay, we\u2019ll take it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed breakout embed-oembed embed--twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Oh ok, we\u2019ll take it off then<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1642383150230773760?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 2, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Over the last few days, many celebrities including LeBron James, Patrick Mahomes II, \u00a0Darius Slay, Monica Lewinsky, and William Shatner have said that <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/03\/31\/celebrity-blue-check-twitter-verification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they won\u2019t be paying for a check mark<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reporter Matt Binder <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattbinder\/status\/1642401198731935747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pointed out<\/a> that Musk deleted a tweet saying that Twitter will give \u201ca few weeks grace\u201d to legacy verified account holders to subscribe to Twitter Blue before removing verification marks from those who don\u2019t pay.
