Vance,<\/strong> having carnal relations with a couch<\/a>? Well, you\u2019re not alone. During his <em>Late Show<\/em> monologue on Thursday, <strong>Stephen Colbert<\/strong> unpacked the online discourse surrounding Vance and his fictional fancying of furniture.<\/p>\n<figure data-testid=\"IframeEmbed\" class=\"IframeEmbedWrapper-sc-dRedg hZcniq iframe-embed\">\n<div data-testid=\"IframeEmbedContainer\" class=\"IframeEmbedContainer-hptgUZ jiSsxp\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"IframeEmbedContent-cMdiev csnuAY IframeEmbedContent\" height=\"113\" width=\"200\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" title=\"Embedded Frame\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/NL1yGqQ3pnA\" allow=\"autoplay *; encrypted-media *; clipboard-write; autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Colbert shouted out the Associated Press for bringing the Vance-couch conversation into the public sphere via a fact-check article titled \u201cNo, J.D. Vance Did Not Have Sex With a Couch.\u201d The rumor, Colbert explained, was spread by various social media accounts alleging that Vance described having sex with a couch in his book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/jd-vance-never-was-and-never-will-be-the-voice-of-appalachia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hillbilly Elegy<\/a>.<\/em> The internet has run wild with the made-up claim, with more and more people making memes and jokes about Vance\u2019s supposed predilection for plush furniture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><em>The Late Show<\/em> host joined in, joking that Vance is not the only politician to be accused of sexual relations with an inanimate object. He then played a doctored clip of President <strong>Bill Clinton<\/strong> saying, \u201cI did not have sexual relations with that ottoman.\u201d (Ottomans are having a moment\u2014a source recently told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> that third-party presidential candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/robert-kennedy-jr-shocking-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/strong>\u2019s friends would joke: \u201cIt\u2019s safe to say he would sleep with an ottoman.<\/a>\u201d) Colbert went on to add that Vance would never sleep with a couch because he\u2019s a devout religious conservative. \u201cHe knows it\u2019s Adam and Eve, not Raymour &amp; Flanigan,\u201d said Colbert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Jokes aside, Colbert lamented how big a problem misinformation can be in the digital age. \u201cEven a well-meaning fact-check can wind up amplifying a false story, so all of us, all of us\u2014please\u2014have responsibility to stop the spread of vicious rumors like \u2018J.D. Vance had sex with a couch,\u2019\u201d he said, direct to camera. \u201cBecause it\u2019s simply not true, which is why we have to refuse to use the hashtag #CushionPushinJDVance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">At the end of his monologue, Colbert highlighted a \u201ctroubling twist\u201d to the Vance-couch conversation: the AP has removed its fact-check. \u201cWhich can mean only one of two things: Either the original story does not meet the AP\u2019s rigorous standards,\u201d he said, \u201cOr J.D.
