Freddie Prinze Jr.<\/strong><\/a> isn\u2019t confirmed for an I Know What You Did Last Summer<\/em> return quite yet \u2014 but he promises he\u2019s trying his best.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing\u2019s a lock until there\u2019s ink on paper, until the contract\u2019s signed, but I\u2019m definitely talking to them,\u201d Prinze Jr., 48, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> while discussing his new film The Girl in the Pool<\/em>. \u201cAnd if we can make everything work \u2014 and I know they wanna make everything work, I know I wanna make everything work \u2014 then we\u2019ll try and make it work. But we gotta make sure everyone\u2019s schedules fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cEverybody has to be happy with the script. I know Jen Robinson, the director [of the reboot], and I like Jen Robinson very much as a director and as a person. I think people like her are the future of this business. So there\u2019s a lot of good things that make me want to do the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Prinze Jr. emphasized that his return isn\u2019t confirmed \u201cuntil a contract or deal is done,\u201d he does know that everyone involved is hoping to make it happen. \u201cI\u2019m motivated, I know they\u2019re motivated. I know both sides are trying to make it work. And hopefully we do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prinze Jr. played Ray in the 1997 horror film opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt<\/strong>, Ryan Phillippe<\/strong> and his now-wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar.<\/strong> The story follows four young friends who are bound by a tragic accident and find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town. The initial movie was penned by Scream<\/em> screenwriter Kevin Williamson<\/strong> and based on the 1973 novel of the same name from author Lois Duncan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While Phillippe and Gellar didn\u2019t make it to the sequel, Prinze Jr. and Hewitt, who played final girl (and Ray\u2019s love interest) Julie, returned for I Still Know What You Did Last Summer<\/em> the following year.<\/p>\n

Both Prinze. Jr and Hewitt seemingly survived the second movie as well, with Ray and Julie revealed to be happily married after a time jump. However, the final moments leave audiences on a cliffhanger when Julie gets swept under her bed, screaming as a mysterious hook pulls her under.<\/p>\n

Where fans would find Ray and Julie in 2024, Prinze Jr. said, is anyone\u2019s guess. \u201cI don\u2019t know. I won\u2019t know where we find them,\u201d the actor told Us<\/em>. \u201cI don\u2019t know what world they\u2019re gonna play in. I just know that everybody\u2019s trying to make it work.\u201d<\/p>\n

A third installment of the franchise was released in 2006, titled I\u2019ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer<\/em>, but starred a brand-new cast and was only released as straight to video.While Prime Video attempted to reboot the franchise with a TV series in 2021, the show was canceled after one season.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Sony announced that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson<\/strong> (Do Revenge<\/em>) would be directing a new reboot<\/a> from a screenplay she cowrote with Sam Lansky,<\/strong> and that Prinze Jr. and Hewitt were in talks to reprise their roles. The movie will star Madelyn Cline<\/strong> and Camila Mendes<\/strong>, with Tony Sarah Pidgeon<\/strong>, Tyriq Withers<\/strong> and Jonah Hauer-King<\/strong> also in negotiations. The film is slated for a July 18, 2025 release.<\/p>\n

Hewitt, who spoke with Us<\/em> weeks before the new film was confirmed, said that she and Prinze Jr. are in a \u201cholding period\u201d as they wait to hear about their potential involvement, but the actress noted she believes they would both \u201cdefinitely come back\u201d if the story felt right.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, I loved doing those movies<\/a>. There is nothing more fun than doing a horror movie. It\u2019s the best,\u201d she shared. \u201cJulie James was awesome. I do think that there\u2019s unfinished business there, and so I would be happy to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, Hewitt and Prinze Jr. are busy focusing on other projects. Hewitt is filming season 8\u00a0 of her ABC hit 9-1-1<\/em>, while Prinze Jr.\u2019s new film The Girl in the Pool <\/em>released on Friday, July 26. The story centers on Prinze Jr.\u2019s Thomas, a man whose life collapses when his mistress (Brielle Barbusca<\/strong>) is found dead in his pool.<\/p>\n
